what are the consequences of driving on a bad throwout bearing?

^ exactly that. The only problem is, eventually it turns into a used-to-be-a-throwout-bearing chunk of metal spinning uselessly in place, so . . . replace it when you can. A little eekeekeekeekeekeekeekeek has been known to go on for quite a while. Failure to work the clutch can't really be tolerated for very long.

Well from my experience, I changed my clutch one time but used the same TOB and after awhile it seized up and ended up ripping out the splines on my ACT 6-puc clutch. Center of that thing was as smooth as a baby's bottom. Lesson to be learned, replace it
