Tiburon tranny swap question

So I am thinking about swapping my auto for a manual in my 99 tiburon, I seen a 98 Accent with a manual transmission for sale and was wondering if the 5 speed from the accent with a 1.5L motor will bolt up to my tiburon?

WytchDctr 03-13-2011 08:42 PM

not a good idea. I personally pulled an alpha trans off the side of a beta that shot its input shaft into the bell housing.

The beta trans are not that expensive, go with what was made for it on this one IMO

So dont get no accent or elentra trannys? Try to find only a tiburon transmission?

WytchDctr 03-13-2011 09:25 PM

beta trans = tib and elantra.

The Elantra tranny actually has better gearing, so if you can get an Elantra tranny...do that. But like Wytch said...either a Tiburon or Elantra tranny will work since their both beta's.

Also there is some notching on the beta block that would need to be done to clear a spot for the clutch slave cylinder. This comparison was made with a 02 Accent 1.5L manual transmission and a 02 Elantra 2.0 Beta 2. I compared the beta 2 trans (Elantra) to the 1.5L Accent trans side by side when I was doing my beta swap, dimension wise they were almost identical down to the mount bracket mounting points. The major difference being, if I remember right, a bit longer and just a bit wider at the differential area were the axles go 1/4 inch wider on each side.

Why is that?

^^What he said^^ This sounds like good news since I have the Elentra Trans, course im asuming this applies to beta 2 Elantras as well.

5th gear is longer on the elantra

Stocker 03-15-2011 12:03 PM

blah, check the gearing. The ratios vary from year to year, there is a chart somewhere around here.

WytchDctr 03-15-2011 01:51 PM

That and elantras are more awesome in general. :domodance:

dckeith18 03-21-2011 11:11 AM

yeah I remember seeing a chart with the elantra gearing ratio being a bit higher, Only problem now is finding a good transmission and the ones at the junkyard have about 150,000+ miles on them, Idk how long the manuals last surely no where near the automatics though.

I can confirm that. I have a 99 elantra tranny in my 97 FX. Its not just 5th gear its the final that's up a notch. You lose just a hair of pull from low rpms but you wouldn't notice the difference if you didn't beat the hell out of your car.

Oh also.. There was only different between my 97 tib trans and the 99 elantra trans. The casting for the front cover/bell housing was exactly the same except the bottom starter bolt hole was 1 inch thinner. I had to put spacers on the original bolt when I first put it in...

In general manual trannnys will outlast an auto trans. You just worry about the synchros when buying a j/y trans. If I was really worried then I would pour some gear oil in the speed sensor hole and see what comes out the drain, if clean then it's good, if metal shavings then it was some how destroyed.

not "better" just higher. You ever drag race?
