As the image in this thread very clearly shows, all synthetics are the same.

 

amsoil (the crap i used) and redline appear to be nearly identical in those pics. this is supposed to make me want to use redline??? i'll stick with what works thanks.



not sure why stocker has such a hard on for redline, its not his car that oldschool dino oil is going into after all!

 

Hey Zero, not sure if it's been recommended yet, but I was thinking.... you should try using Redline oil. That's what I use.

 

I had a hard time finding 75w-90 Gl-4 too. In fact, I had a hard time finding and GL-4 at all. To put your mind at ease, in my various alpha transmissions, I've run:



SAE 80 GL-5 synthetic

SAE 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic

SAE 80w-90 GL-5 synthetic

SAE 75w-90 GL-4 semi-synthetic



I've never blown a trans, despite the fact that I foolishly ran GL-5 for a while. The only difference is that you drain a lot of metal shavings out of a transmission with 10,000 GL-5 miles.







It will be fine if you run a few ounces of 80w-90 GL-4. I think you just got unlucky with your blown trans.

 

yeah metal shavings in the oil are ok. transmissions don't need metal.

well f*ck. if i want a GL4 only gear oil it seems that there is only synth left available in the world after a long google search. the GL4 and 5 compatible stuff isn't supposed to be such a great idea...

 

Call a Toyota dealership. I bet they have some.
