Here's the stock info...
Transmission Ratios:
1st: 3.462 2nd: 1.950 3rd: 1.393 4th: 1.031 5th: 0.825 Rear Gear Ratio 1: 3.650:1

1st gear 6500 RPM 37 mph
2nd gear 6500 RPM 61 mph
3rd gear 6500 RPM 86 mph
4th gear 6500 RPM 116 mph
5th gear 6500 RPM 145 mph
Random, what model year Tiburon do these specifications belong to? My '97 1.8l 5speed aren't near those figures. My gears max out as follows..

1st gear 6500 RPM 35 mph
2nd gear 6500 RPM 58 mph
3rd gear 6500 RPM 80 mph
4th gear 6500 RPM 105 mph
5th gear 5500 RPM 125 mph (can't go higher..govrn'd)

Now, Autotrader lists a slightly different set of ratios for my 97 5speed 1.8 when compared to that of webtech so i'll go with webtech for obvious reasons.

However, 1.8's during 1997 have different 4th and 5th gear ratios than 2.0's...

1.8l Fourth 1.061
2.0l Fourth 1.031

1.8l Fifth 0.878
2.0l Fifth 0.825

Obviously the 1.8l has shorter ratios, but the final drive is the same @ 3.650

So why doesn't my 1st gear hit 37 mph or my 2nd gear hit 61 mph? My 0-60 times are slower because i have to make the 2-3 upshift @ 58 mph. Arrgg.
Right now i can't make sense of it when the 1.8/2.0 have the same final drive. The speed vs. time graph should be the same between the 1.8/2.0 until i hit 4th gear. And 4th gear is different like it should be....105 mph @6500 vs. 116 mph @ 6500.
What do you guys think??? Random??? suicide

Your speedo needle is probably off, or your tire size is different than stock, throwing your speedo needle off.

You know, i just noticed the 2001 and my 1997 share the same ratios in all gears. I am driving with 17" rims w/ 205/40/R17 tires. I didn't think it would throw it off that much. How do i get it re-adjusted??

yes, you're speedo is off. speedos aren't completely accurate. for instance, mine tops out at 35mph in 1st, 60 in 2nd, 85 in 3rd, and 110 in 4th. furthermore, your tach isn't completely on, either. i verified this with the s-afc, when i could see the actual rpms vs. what the tach read. if you want to play around with gear ratios, www.smokemup.com has a gear ratio calculator. if you want to play around with tire sizes and how much it will affect your speedo reading, go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

with 205/40/17's, your speedo is 0.1% slow. 205/40/17 is about as close to the stock tire size you'll get with different sized tires.

There are custom gearsets available in Korea, but they are not CHEAP. I'm sure the Kspec guys could get them for you if you emailed them.

BTW...figure out RPM/speed based off ratios here..

First...calculate your exact tire diameter

then use this to calcuate speed/rpm

Bookmark this puppy for all of your auto-math needs or calculations

Keep in mind, the "acceptable" limit of error in speedo's is 5%. For tacho's it's also 5%. That meanst at 5000 RPM, you could be showing 4750, or 5250. Or at 50 MPH, you could be showing 47.5 or 52.5 MPH.

Final Gear 4.412 for better acceleration.
Final Gear 4.294 for better acceleration.

Just go to www.kspec.com, click on POWERTRAIN in the left hand side, and there they are at the bottom.

Listed as FGR's...

FGR's are Final Gear Ratios. I think he was refering to 1st thru 5th gears as replacements.
