Default Improved Clutch Release Shaft Upper and Lower Bushings (Clutch Squeek)

TSB # 02-40-024

Improved Clutch Release Shaft Upper and Lower Bushings
Elantra 1999-2002, Sonata 1999-2002 and Tiburon 1997-2003

These new bushings may be used to reduce a "squeak" or "squawk" noise in vehicles produced before 11/17/01 (Transmission #963248) using the following procedure.

PROCEDURE:
Confirm that the vehicle was produced before 11/17/01.

Confirm the "squeak" or "squawk" noise in the vehicle as follows:

Open the vehicle hood with the engine off
Have someone operate the clutch pedal
Listen for the noise in the top bushing area
Replace the upper and lower bushings with the bushings identified with the >N66< mark as shown in the "PARTS INFORMATION" on page 1 of this TSB. Follow the bushing replacement procedure outlined in the appropriate shop manuals.

So is this like a recall that my dealership will do for me? Cause I have lots of squeaking with my clutch.

It is a TSB. Techical Service Bulliten. Your dealership SHOULD replace your shift bushings with the new ones under warranty.

Use the TSB # in the post to let your dealer know about it, but the end decision for them to fix/replace is theirs. TSB's are reccomendations, not recalls.

I just had this problem fixed in my car. It is well worth it to have them fix it. I never thought my car had a serious shifting or clutch problem because it came on over time. Since they replaced the bushings my car is like new!!!

If our car is out of warranty (I bought mine barely used and it only carried over 2 years worth of warranty -- this was before the 10 yr warranties were offered), how hard is that to replace? Would I have to take the whole transmission apart?

I'm sure I'll need a new clutch post-turbo install, so I might as well change it then. But I've had that squeak for 2 years now and would love to get rid of it.

thanks,
ac

Yeah, you gotta seperate the tranny from the engine to get in there and replace the bushings.

I did this to my car like in september. That is, IF we're talking about the same bushing. If you're talking about the one I am, it should take about 20 minutes to do. And, why replace it? Good ol' grease works well.
