How did you first learn to drive a stick?
As the title says, how did you first learn how to drive a standard transmission? I learned in a GMC Sonoma. A friend of mine used to be a car salesman for a GM dealer, and we went out in a new truck and he taught me how to drive it in a parking lot. laugh.gif I stalled it about 10 times but eventually got the hang of it and drove it back to the dealer in traffic. Ever since then I was hooked and every car I bought from there on out was a 5 speed.

Well..... it was in a tib (not mine) and it was because we were out at world of beers and the only way to get home was if I drove his car. Did perfect till we stopped at steak and shake on the way, for some reason after that stop I couldn't drive good anymore stalled like twice and did I nice burnout lol.

I was about 10 when my dad taught me to drive the 79 Chevy Luv. We were driving on a dirt road, and by the end of the day I was able to offroad a bit. I even got stuck in the middle of a hill and had to get out and turn the hubs for 4 wheel drive and get it started on the hill. I will admit though, it was just about the easiest manual transmission that I've ever driven. Very forgiving.

faithofadragon's always got some hilarious story.
my first manual was in Daewoo Llanos in Warsaw when i was 15 years old. i did flawless. Great car!! |
First stick I drove succesfully was a 92 Toyota pickup that I drive to this day for work. That truck is less then 8,000 miles away from a half million...

First was a Ford F350 crew cab w/ a 460 ci engine.... Was an oil company vehicle, my dad was teaching me to drive standard.
Well, was used to dropping the clutch from playing old arcade games ( Hard Drivin' especially). Long story short, squawked a 1-ton's tires (it even did a little rear end bounce), got a "WHAT THE F##K ARE YOU DOING?", and slowly retrained myself to start properly. And that, is how I first learned to drive standard. |
My cousin gave me a 10 minute lesson in her Intergra and then later that day I bought my 94 Escort. It was a 2.0 and honestly i think it was about as fast as my beta accent..... sad.gif anyways, drove it home with no trouble really. Had to get to school the next day and I learned pretty quick.

I got the concept of driving a stick from my moms 92 shadow es. it spun out on ice and smacked a semi so there it sat in the back yard. Everyday after school i would sit there and get the gest of the shift pattern, the car ran but i never drove it. Then i got a job a chevy dealership and i was driving new cameros and vettes, hooked every since.
