clutch question??
i was turning a corner to go down a street to my friends house bout an hour ago, and i had my car in second. i push in the clutch as i turned the corner and i reved kinda high(bout 4k rpms) and let out the clutch. well it didnt catch. i was still at 4k and it slowly droped to bout 3-2.5k and finally cought. then bout half way down the block, i got the god awful burnt clutch smell. could my clutch be going out already?? ive never owned a manual so im not sure what the warning signs are. its a 2k 5spd with 42k miles on it. im not too hard on the clutch, although i tend to ride it a lot. any info would be greatly appritiated. thanks crew.
oh and to kinda finish the story. i drove past my friends house cause i was ganna go out in the country to kinda test my car(small town, bout 1200 ppl) so i come to this stop sign and i tried to simulate what i did earlier and i took off fine, but kinda quick, and there was a cop sittin there. i didnt peal out or take off like a mad man, but my engine was reved kinda high, no biggy. well i didnt want the cop to follow me so i turned down the next street to go back to my friends. i get there and start talkin to my friend in the front yard, and about a min later the cop comes around the corner and turns on his brights. he then pulled along the side of my car and put the ol' spot light on it. wtf??? small town cops piss me off. they dont have **** to do, so they bug us younger types and act like they are some kind of pillar of the community. sorry to make this lengthy, but it pissed me off and i had to vent. all better now.

If you ride your clutch alot, it could be going bad at 42K. How you drive affects the clutch more than mileage. Properly driven, a clutch can last 200,000 miles no problem. If you ride it, or slip it like you did above...then the life shortens....
My guess is that it is just what you did caused it to slip...if it starts doing that ALL THE TIME...then it is time to replace it.

Our clutches are self adjusting. You can bleed the system for air, and flush/change out the fluid that might help.
One word of warning. Slipping your clutch alot causes heat. Heat causes the clutch to glaze over. There might be another 100,000 miles of friction materal left in the clutch, but if you glaze it over due to heat, it will not grip.
Some people have just removed the layer of glazing with sandpaper, and reinstalled the original clutch...but usually, if you are going through all that trouble...you might as well put in a new one.
