Default Is it a clutch or clutch master cylinder problem?

It just started happening with my 01 Tib. When you push the clutch pedal in, every time it makes a slight squeeking/rubbing noise. And you can feel it in the pedal, like it requires more friction to push down all the way.

It also seems like the clutch won't actually engage until the pedal is all the way out now. Before it used to engage when the pedal was maybe half way up.

Is it time for a new clutch or CMC? How do I check both of them?

It sounds more like a dodgy throw out bearing mate.

basics first

one squeak or eek-eek-eek-eek-eek-eek?

is the fluid fresh and topped off?

is anything rubbing anything in the engine bay?

how does the slave cylinder rod look when it's extended? Shiny?

Any leaks? Pull back the boots (if any) to check.

is the pedal adjusted properly? Maybe it's just a worn pedal bushing

have someone push the clutch pedal in while you watch the slave cyl. if it moves freely than it is most likely not the master cyl. you can also buy master cyl rebuild kits as sometimes the rod bends just before the plunger-...

I guess I should've been more clear. Its more like an ehhh...like rubber rubbing against metal. Very slight sound, you have to strain to hear it.

I checked the fluid and it is pretty dark. I need to change that out and rebleed the system. I'll do that and hopefully that'll fix the problem. The slave rod moves freely and nothing is obstructing it.

Just be aware it might also be time to rebuild/replace the one or both of the cylinders. *very* dark fluid might be from the o-rings changing from hydraulic oil seals into oil contamination. Fortunately the slave cylinder (don't know about the master fortunately!) is fairly inexpensive and rebuild kits are probably cheap as well.

Well that sucks. I'll start off with new fluid and bleeding the system first and see how that holds up.

I imagine to bleed it just keep fluid in the clutch reservoir. Then pump the clutch several times and hold it down, then have someone open up the bleed screw on the slave until fluid stops running out. Then tighten the bleed screw and repeat until you get fresh fluid and no bubbles. Does that sound correct?

And the slave cylinder is what's mounted on top of the transmission? And the clutch master cylinder is what's mounted to the firewall with the fluid reservoir attached? Is that correct? Thanks!
