I read that people who do a lot of auto crossing and ¼ mile racing build their trannys to have close ratios gears. How bad is this for daily driven street cars?

It's only bad for fuel economy and might be annoying rowing through gears more often. I would love to have a close ratio transmission, but for autox it doesn't generally matter, most people do the entire run aside from the start in 2nd gear and leave it.

Drag, road course, rally could all benefit a lot from the closer ratios however.
