Changing Gears
I was wondering if anybody has ever changed the gearing in their beta transmissions so that the gears are longer or better? Is it something worth doing or a waste of time and money for a street car?

The "easiest" option would be swapping out the final drive gear. The elantra beta II has the tallest one and I believe it's around 3.65. The beta II trans final drive ratio is like 4.05.
|
You can play around with a few gears to make them longer, better depends on the application.
Alphas trannys from an LC have longer 3rd 4th and 5th. The final drive depending on the engine it could be 3.65 or 3.84 (SHOC 1.5L and DOHC 1.6L) If you use the 5th from an LC tranny you have to use the entire tail (if it's called that way). Elantras also have 3.65 final gears. |
I have the GK 4.05 transmission in my J2. It's the way to go if you want to stay NA and don't care about the high rpm on the highway. I wish there was a .70 or so 5th gear I could swap into it. Then it would be the best of both worlds. For FI just run the stock 3.65 transmission.

In your case hoy can swap out 5th from a LC. It will help.

The HD elantra has a fifth gear of like .78 and it's a beta II transmission.
|
If my memory doesn't fail me, I think the LC is .787.
Do you have the ratios for that tranny? |
That's cool. I've never heard of people swapping parts between the Alpha and Beta transmissions.
I'll add that to my want-to-buy-list. |
You need yo grab everything. From the cover to everything inside and swap it.
