I was wondering if there was any solution to the weak 5th gear our Tiburons suffer from.

I know that they can't handle alot of torque.

Any company that makes a solution to this problem?

 

Replace the tranny. That's the only solution I've ever heard of.

I thought the IDEA of the fifth gear was a cruising gear. Thats why it is weak, you are not suppose to accelerate in that gear.

I think CNK was making a new fifth gear. HVE may offer their dog gear tranny rebuild.

You could also try and get the gear sets from korea for like $3k.

What about Cyro treating the transmisison?

 

Freeze treatments of metal parts serve to align the molecules better so as to make them more crystaline and therefore stronger. It's often done on rifle barrels to eliminate some harmonics. It also makes the metal slightly more brittle. The best solution is some other metal or a better design.

 

really! i think otherwise. I seem to do well im fifth gear at over 100mph. 4th takes me to 100, but not beyone, and the acceleration slows to a crawl, but when i shift to 5th, I over take my competitor. weird, but I don't think that it is slow in its power range. you ought to try driving at those high speeds, ha ha ha.

 

you said it make the metal stronger AND more brittle. that doesn't sound right to me.

 

Freezing treatments have worked wonder in other transmission, I suppose you can theorize what could be a problem. But in practice it seems to work.

As for accelerating in fith gear, Yes you can with stock HP, since it becomes such a long gear,and with stock horse power is does not task it.

But start putting down 200hp or more, and a nice helathy 200torque. smile.gif then ya get problems.

 

You'll have to rebuild the tranny with a motorsports-specific gearset, the cost of which is insanely prohibitive. Thats about the only option I can think of if you want to run the original housing.

 

Does a 1.8l '97 Rev A tib carry a different tranny than the 2.0l Beta (1st and 2nd gen)? I heard that trannies coupled to the 1.8l carried shorter gears, however BlkTib said his 4th only goes to 100mph whereas mine actually takes me to 105mph then my 5th will take to 125mph no problem which is 5,500 rpms but that's when the speed governer kicks in and won't let me go any faster.
Another annoying thing is my 2nd gear doesn't reach 60mph either, more like 57-58mph which is somewhat shorter than most cars. I just hate shifting into 3rd just to hit 60mph since my 0-60mph run will include 2 shifts which probably add more to the time than neccessary.

 

The 1.8L and the 2.0L have the same 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Reverse and Same Final drive.

117 @ 6500 RPM 4th gear
141 @ 6500 RPM 5th gear

The 2.0L tranny can do
120 @ 6500 RPM in 4th gear
150 @ 6500 RPM in 5th gear

And for those of you that wondered..

35 @ 6500 RPM in 1st gear
64 @ 6500 RPM in 2nd gear
89 @ 6500 RPM in 3rd gear

So, If you can't get to 60mph in second...your speedo is off, you are shifting early, or you've got oversized tires that are throwing your speedo off.
