I always keep my hand on the shifter. I dont believe that it wear things out any faster than not putting your hand on it. And I would never engage my ebrake on a hill. I do keep it in neutral though when I'm stopped without the clutch pressed in.

If your hand sitting on it is pushing things against syncos it will wear them out. I did it when my Genesis trans started to sound like a can with rocks in it after the single mass. You would be surprised how little you have to push to cause that.

I've always rested my hand on the shifter with no problems. It feels unnatural to put it anywhere else other than the shifter or the steering wheel.

I guess I'm the only nerd that does everything in this video. Including the brake trick, especially when 4 wheeling some gnarly hills.

I rest my hand on the shifter too but I don't push it up or down in the gear it's in. I just rest it on top lightly. I've always done that since the day I learned to drive a manual. No problems and I did it in the Tiburon every day for 10 years too.

Resting your hand on the shifter isn't a problem for most front wheel drive cars because there's no direct connection to the transmission. This is typically only a problem where the shifter goes right into the tranny itself.
