Default 2003 Tibby! 5-speed/6-speed?

HELP!

Okay, here's the question.

Will the 6-speed be faster at the line and overall than the 5-speed?

The reason for this question is because I am about to buy my 2003 Tib and I was planning on buying the 6-speed. However, I have heard that the 5-speed is more for line racing and 1/4 stretch whereas the 6-speed is for all out racing? I want to only whip some ass off the line and maybe a couple 1/4 miles at my local track. But, I dont wanna spend $1800 more dollars if I dont have to. Any suggestions will be accepted.

5-speed or 6-speed? That is the question

Thanks!

Get the I4 and screw the 6! tongue.gif

With the money you save from buyin the I4 over the 6, drop a turbo on the I4 and you will be pushing well over 200HP. From what I hear its the way to go for the most performance out of the 2003's due the the weak block of the 6 and lack of aftermarket parts... not to mention its goin to be more coslty to "jack" up the 6. Dont quote me on this its just what I have heard. It seems to make sense if you ask me.

So get your brand new 2003 Turbocharged I4 5 speed and go rip some chit up!

Börg

I found already the 6-speed to be a bit of a pain, and you don't get better gas mileage either. Beauty though is the 240 km/h top speed. Never tried it, but considering I heard it goes to 240 km/h and in 5th it barely breaks a sweat at 200 km/h down an open stretch, I would see it easily hitting 240 km/h.

First gear is really short anyway in the 6-speed which is the main point.

The turbo idea is great and all. Until you want to get warranty work done. Then your screwed. Cause remember if the turbo had anything to do with the problem, your screwed.

V6 is nice but yes the parts tend to be costly BUT you get a lot more performance out of them. So it evens out in the long run.

Sounds like the 5-speed more has your eye. To be honest, I am kinda wishing I waited for the 5-speed to come to Canada, but well hopefully it will keep the resale value up. I'm not a drag strip or racer really much. But that first gear to second can be a pain.

Thanks for that Info!

I definitley want to stay away from the Turbo because I am not looking for the ultimate speed. I just want to use my car on and around the streets. So, the 5-speed will definitley do the trick saving me almost 1800 bucks and the parts are not as expensive if I have to fix a 6-speed. Well not as expensive. Thanks again for all the info.

Plewy:

If you don't want to modify the car much, go with the V6 6speed. It will spank the I4 5-speed.

The I4 5-speed is only better if you plan on trying to get more than 250 HP out of the car....

Ok got a question. I need the figures on what the Tib 2003 I-4 weights. I want to know if it weights the same or more than the second gen. Cause if the weight is almost the same, I would get the I-4. I just not sure if driving the I-4 during breaking and the first 5,000 miles would be enjoyable. But speaking of the the new 5 speed. Is the clutch better?

Magus,
The 2003 I4 is just a shade of 3000lbs. It's almost 400lbs heavier than the 1st and 2nd gens.

The v6 only adds about 20 lbs to that.

Hmmmm, I find that a lil weird that the 2.0 only weights 20 lbs more than the 2.7 V6! I guess if you want to go I-4 you should get a 1gen or 2 gen! Thanks man. I being trying to get a number.

You have to take into account that the 2.0 I4 is mainly cast iron while the V6 is mainly light alluminum.

And yeah, how many people are actually going to push their car past 250 HP?

BTW: A GM team took the 4-cyl 2L engine from the Cavalier/Sunfire and using methanol, nitrous and turbo had it pushing 810 HP at the wheels, using the stock block! This shows the power of small cast iron engines.
