That's what I was thinking. But then I thought, why not just use a BOV?

Well, i dont think a BOV would work for what hes doing.

I believe hes using the wastegate in the charge pipe to hold in boost, additionally a signal line is routed from the charge pipe to the wastegate, when the boost reaches a certain PSI the boost pushes the wastegate open, regulating the boost.

A bov is only opened under vacuum, and there isnt any vacuum when boosting

what would be more simple is to use a radiator cap type pressure release valve, when the boost reaches a certain PSI it pushes open the valve.

I mentioned that. It's called a Pop-off valve. Many stock boosted cars have these to prevent over boosting due to a wastegate failure.

If he wanted, he could find one from such a car and modify it to be adjustable. My 300zx came with one preset to like 12psi I believe.

Yah it would have been much easier with the pop off, but it works with the wastegate.
