Around here I have two choices.. dial up or Comcast internet access. EVERYTIME we get a radical temperature change, my cable modem goes offline. I think out of the last 12 months I have had it, I have only had access for 11 due to it being offline.

Of course by the time they come and fix it, whatever has caused the problem is over and it fixed itself. It does not help that it can take 3 to 5 days before they can get somebody out here.

The big problem though, I live next to the remains of a trailer park. (still in use, but nothing is taken care of, nor is there an association) and my cable comes up through the park before it reaches me.. to judge by my neighbors, I doubt any of them have cable modems (or legal cable hookups) so when my line goes down, it is only me who complains..

This time around, I have somebody coming out bright and early sunday (easter) and hopefully with it being early and still chilly in the mornings, they can finally discover what is wrong

well, they finally came and fixed my connection today. Almost a week without internet at home really sucks. Now it really flies though. According to the techs, the "trap" up on the pole was corroded, so they just removed it.

A trap is basically a "choke" a limiter to slow the amount of information traveling along the lines... Their thinking was that if it starts to slow down once more to the point where my modem starts resetting itself again, not having the limiter in place will keep me above that threshold. Works for me, means I have the full power of a cable modem at my fingertips

I love my road runner, 2 years without one second of downtime since i had it installed.

And i run 4 computers simultaneously through the modem, everything loads up stupid quick even with all of us.

I spoke too soon.. 8:30 last night as the temps got near freezing.. modem offline. This morning, as soon as the temps got into the 40s.. back on. If it happens again tonight, I am taking a walk with my modem, a battery, and my laptop and going down the street to see where I can still get a connection.

So glad that they have the cable connections outside the houses
