So I'm trying to get my best friend a job. He's applied to about 15 stores here and a few of them were online. He doesn't want to work anywhere close because it's really turned into a bad area over the last 10 years, there are a lot of gangs, violence, drugs, homeless, you name it. Recently there have been wild car chases and drug busts a few blocks away from my house. And it's not stopping. It's like an Amoeba, or a virus that just keeps swallowing up all the good and grows bigger and bigger.

Understandably my friend doesn't want to take the bus with some of the loons, and he wants to walk to work. Well the ONLY place I found for him is a Video store. It's perfect because it's within walking distance and my friend loves movies. It's our VERY last resort.

Come in looking like James Bond. We talk to the fellows up there about a position and even some John Wayne movies. We had a nice chat that ended up with them telling my friend what to wear when he works. They even wrote down his name so they know whos application it is. So we made a very good impression. Then the clerk tells us the only way to apply is online. We do that twice, one of which doesn't come through. He keeps calling and they keep telling him either to catch the manager or that it didn't go through.

I hate online job applications! They don't show who you really are! My friend really needs the job, he's 21 without a car, license, never had a job. I've got a fiscal plan for him too, to make enough money to buy a Tiburon so that he can open up his world to a bunch of better jobs farther away. Afterall a car opens up limitless new doors to just about any job you want. I work in a good area up north, the only way I'm doing it is thanks to my car... That doesn't change the fact that I hate where I live and I hate online job applications.

you get interviewed where they ask the same questions as they asked on the test

^Those tests are so stupid. They dont show who you really are. Ive had bad luck with jobs while here in NY too..I got two interviews and for Autozone they told me they didnt want someone who was only going to be there until May and Walmart didnt hire me because they couldnt get a hold of one more reference. Wtf?? If they had a Pep Boys around here then Id probably would have took the job they offered me in NJ and then just get transfered..but heck I have bad luck sometimes.

I know how you feel HKC..apps. in general just suck, and the companies end up hiring some guy who cant even do the job right. mad.gif

yeah it's sooo stupid! it's like a million questions, takes about 40 mins at the store and 25-30 mins at home. they ask you the same dumb questions over and over again. My friend will not get hired, even though there's a "Now Hiring" sign out in the window.

"are you at least 18 or older?" "YES" "are you 16?" "NO"

Do you live anywhere but California?" "YES" "If you live in Calfornia are you familiar that you might have to take a piss test?" "NO"

"are you at least 15?" "NO" "Do you like getting aggrivated and raged at people for not knowing something?" "NO"

..."Are you 16?"

Have people really gone that dumb? I mean, that's so far below standards. Not only that but they ask you like 20 questions that are the same. Why?! Has this world gone mad? Why wouldn't they want to see the people before they hire them?

At my restaurant we speak about who the person is after we've had the chancde to see them. If we don't like them we toss their application. Simple as that. My friend neeeeeds to work there. And this BS online crap is really holding him from it. Swift, I now know your pain. I don't know what the heck this is some joke? Maybe they're trying to hire retarded people. Thank goodness this stuff isn't going on in Europe.

Yah there so stupid in how they handle hiring people these days.

Example, i was really trying to get into walmart, shit job i know but its the best for a college student that is constantly having to go home for breaks, or in between semesters, since i can work in my home town and at school.

prepare yourself...lol...

I tried to get hired at the walmart near my house, during "now hiring" times, and i sat there like an idiot filling out the goddamn application there's are the best lol. (if anybody answered them honestly you wouldnt get an interview) Any way my sister (been there since they opened, best friends with asst manager), my cousin (department manager - grocery), my other cousin, my aunt, and some of my friends ALL work there and were pulling for me, saying im a great kid and they should hire me. I got yanked around and never got called. My sister told me to put it in again, and this time i called myself and asked the personell manager, she said she would look into it and call me within a week. I called back 2 weeks later and asked again, she said my app got deleted and i would need to put it in again. I decided to just stick it out until i went to school working at my restaurant. When i moved to my school town i instantly put in an app and tried to talk to some assistant managers and they assured me i could get hired if i put in an app. I called and they said the were hiring but would have to wait for my app to get looked at since they had so many apps going in, a couple days later i asked if they had a chance to look at my app and they said "were not hiring." So i took another job at a shitty restaurant @ like 10 hours a week and 5.15 an hour. Finally after my first year i called my best friend/ cousin - the dept manager, and i was like dude you have got to get me into there because i cant keep working at shitty restaurants for no money. He hassled the assistant managers enough to finally get me an interview and they hired me, after the drug test of course lol.

After they hired me the assistant managers kept asking me why i hadnt started working there earlier, and i was baffled. I told them its because their shitty application system, they said yah its just no good, we can never find good people.. Im thinking, well do something about it, dumbasses.

alex, same exact crap happenning here! whenever my friend calls, they tell him either wait a week, the app didn't come through, or talk to a manager when he comes in. damnit who is the manager, is he never there?!

yeah i'm working at a crap restaurant, good for college for now though, lucky them.

i really do not understand why they lay us off like that. your story sounds like my friends story but you have had that happen to you a more times than just once. weird how i thought once that as long as you come to school, you'll come out rich regardless and everyone just gets some cool job out of school. boy was i wrong.

there's competition, school systems suck and you have to outsmart it when you get out, money is little, work is painful and long, customers and people just suck, everyone treats you like scumbag when you're really just a young college kid trying to get some justice. i've now figured out that a job is your life. and the only way to get hired at a job you want is the hell with embarassment, annoy the fvck out of them, afterall they've asked for it.

Welcome to Corporate America. I work at three casinos in Atlantic City as an on-call Employee. I am a Stage Electrician and I make damn good money at it. Resorts and Borgata were no BS. Filled out the app online at Borgata and then had an interview.. I knew the lead electrician at Resorts.. filled out the app, and he had me hired..

Harrahs.. that was a different matter. Did the online app.. came into the "talant" offices.. did ANOTHER online app. finally got a call from Talent to come in and get processed.. had to do it THREE times due to errors.. did the drug tests, oked them to search for any criminal stuff... and then I had to do THREE days of training. They had me in there two days to learn how to deal with customers.. and the third day I was just supposed to be walked through my department..

1: I never see the customers and they never see me. If they see me, I am doing something wrong backstage.

2: I have been a stage Electrician since I got out of college in 1995.. I think I know how the department works, thank you very much.

Coporate america sucks.. with walmart you are dealing with a NATIONWIDE company that does, frankly, cater to the lowest common denominator. The people at my local walmart make Kit-fox look like a distinguished gentleman and college graduate.
