Removing rear rotors
2007 Sonata
Rear rotors
After removing the caliper bracket and the set screw, what is holding the rotor from coming off? Do I have to remove the rubber plug and line it up with something?
I don't want to start smacking the rotor until I get an answer here.

Make sure the parking brake is off. The hole where the "set screw" was is actually there to help remove the rotor. The "set screw" really isn't. It's just a plug designed to keep the threads of that hole clean. You need to get an 8mm bolt that's the same thread pitch as the screw you removed. It needs to be a bit longer than the one you removed. When you screw that bolt into the hole, it will push against the hub and pop the rotor free.

you take off the caliper, then the two 17mm bolts holding the rest of the caliper in place. mine were rock solid so it was difficult to remove. if you still cannot remove the rotor, two things: there are screws holding it on, or it's rusted to the hub. if it's rusted, take a piece of wood against the inside, and pound it gently with a drilling hammer or mallet.

There are no screws holding it on. The "screw" is only a plug, it does not hold the rotor to the hub. Do NOT hit the rotor. That hole in the rotor that is filled by the plug is to facilitate removal. Remove plug, screw in longer bolt, rotor pops off. No hammer needed.

I went to that website and found the manual and under rear brakes it said what you said. Insert a 8mm bolt. First off it was 6mm not 8 and second it did not do anything. So the manual is completely wrong. The rotor does NOT come off with some tapping. There is no rust but something is holding the rotor on. perhaps something needs to be done to release the ebrake?

it shouldn't. my rotors move freely with the caliper and wheel off. the only thing keeping from removing it completely is the remainder of the caliper, but once you get that off there should be nothing keeping it hooked on. i have Zinc plated rotors, and my best guess would be you have some stock rusted rotors. can you get a photo for us?

i tried it as well with a long bolt and the bugger did nothing whatsoever! it seemed like it just went through.
also, tapping the piece of wood against the rotor won't hurt the rotor because the wood absorbs the shock. it just shakes some of that rust loose. i've done it before, you just have to rotate it a few times while giving it a good clean pound. a regular hammer won't do nothing, it's got to be one of these babies: http://s7.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00938311000-5 This could be a bad piece of advice on my behalf and i probably wouldn't recommend it either, but it worked fine for me. and it also worked when i had to pry off the corroded drum brake disc off of the other car.

Did you make sure the parking brake is released?
You may need a longer bolt. Eventually, the bolt will hit the backing plate or hub and push the rotor off.
If this still doesn't work, remove the center console and loosen the cable adjuster nut. It's located on the bracket where the single handle cable connects to the 2 rear cables.

The parking brake is released. The rotor does turn freely, it just does not come off. I just want to confirm that with the caliper off, ebrake released and the set screw out the rotor should come off.
