Those of you that compete alot what class are you placed in when you run and what mods do you have that put you in that class?
If you have minimal mods done but very sticky and good tires for autox will that still put you in a higher class with people who have alot of mods done or will you remain in a lower class? another words how much do tires make a difference as to what class youre placed in?

For SCCA events I run in FSP (F Street Prepared). With other organizations I run other classes also based on their criteria.
There is a lot that goes into classing, far too much to put it all here,
Mods that keep me out of H Stock are wheels (not stock size), drilled and slotted brake rotors, rear sway bar, air intake, big bore throttle body, intake manifold boring, intake port matching, phenolic spacer, exhaust header, relocated cat, pedal kit, debadging, front grille, rolled rear fender lip, tire width, and removed spark plug cover.
Mods that keep me out of ST (Street Touring) are big bore throttle body, intake manifold boring, intake port matching, phenolic spacer, relocated cat, and a non-OE type of cat (ok in STX or STU).
I have no mods that prohibit me from running in FSP, so it is the lowest level at which I can compete.
You can check the SCCA 2010 SOLO Rulebook against your mods. Start reading at page 69 and write down what keeps you out of a class until you come to a class that you are not prohibited from running. You could list your mods and I could help you class your car, but as you can see from my list unless a mod is SPECIFICALLY allowed it's by default illegal in a class. Some of the mods are pretty minor, but will still put you out of a class.
I don't have to run in FSP though if I don't want, I have some options. The easiest if I just don't care about possibly winning a trophy or season points would be to run in TO (Time Only). I think that's sort of a cop out though, so I never have. I can also run in PAX or T (Street Tire). PAX uses an index to (sort of) put you on an even footing against other competitors with cars that are in different classes. Street Tire works the same way only competitors are not allowed to run race tires. My index class is FSP, for 2010 my PAX index factor is 0.838. So you take my time and multiply it times my index.
My raw time: 56.23
My index time: 47.12
Someone running H Stock's raw time: 58.47
Their HS (0.803) index time: 46.95
Someone running Street Modified's raw time: 53.95
Their SM (0.877) index time: 47.31
So if we were all running in T (or all in PAX), I would beat the SM guy despite him running more than 2 seconds faster than me, but the HS guy would beat me despite running more than 2 seconds slower than I did.
Oddly, you can run full race tires in any class except for the Street Tire and Street Touring classes. Yep, you can show up in a bone stock Accent on Hoosier A6's (as long as they will fit on stock sized wheels) and run in the H Stock class. To add to that, you could also be running basically any aftermarket strut and a full custom exhaust system after the cat and run in H Stock. The rules for that are fairly weird.
