Default 'Throw the car into the corner'

I'm trying to define the term ' throw the car intot he corner' for my dad. I told him that you can take three approaches to rotating the car, allowing the car to make a corner that it otherwise wouldn't: trail brake, abrupt transition into the corner, or power oversteer. The question was prompted by the track classroom instructor mentioning that it is possible to go faster than limit-of-adhesion cornering.

What techniques do you use, and what results do you see?

Are you coming at this from a showing off situation or an actual you want to go out and race with other cars on the track type situation?

If I say I "threw the car into the corner" I am generally talking about a Scandinavian flick.

Left foot braking and late apexing will go a long ways.

It's only possible to go faster than limit of adhesion cornering if the car is

a) unbalanced, and

b) in a transient state

So an understeering car might momentarily get its peak grip during a scandinavian flick, but that isn't sustainable. Further more, you sacrifice more time by turning the car the wrong way than what you gain by getting a momentary spike in cornering grip.

tl;dr drive smoothly at the limit of grip and you'll win. That's how every fast tarmac driver does it.

If you want to see what he is actually talking about watch Rhys Millen's Pikes Peak run from last year in the Gen Coupe. You could not beat his time by driving smoothly at the limit of grip.

But I wasn't saying the Scandinavian flick makes you go faster on pavement, just that's what I mean if I throw the car into the corner. It's intentionally unsettling it for some sideways action or preloading the suspension for one reason or another. Now on gravel, different story.
