All I can say is... WOW! I love this car, handled much better then I thought, and by the end of the day I really felt the limits of the car. I was beating the living crap out of this car, 1st to 2nd only and pretty much at redline all the time. Car did take the abuse, but scared the hell out of me when I noticed ticking/knocking. Turned out to be just valve tick since I had like 2500 miles on my oil and it was time for an oil change. I am hoping no long term or serious damage to the motor or trans... It seems fine now after driving it home on the highway and driving it around town... After driving back home theres no ticking sound or any crazy sounds. I will post up pics if they took any pics of me at the event.

the ticking comes from the crazy forces that you deal with in an autocross keeping oil out of the head. i dont think anyone ever figured out how to help more oil get to the head, or if it's even anything to worry about.

Yea, from what I heard the best thing is to(as always) use good oil and to try and time it so that you are doing the AutoX about 1,000 miles after the oil change was done. Not too sure why though.

Congratulations! Hope you had fun.

Not cool, never shift down into first unless your wheels are motionless. The tib is not made for that kind of abuse. If you don't have "enough" torque on the lower end of second gear you need to do little things here and there (NA mods), NOT shift down into 1st.

Ticking? or knocking? ticking will be *tick *tick *tick which is most likely what you heard and happens to everyone. I've found using an oil with a small "range" of viscosity helps keep the ticking down. But only if your car doesn't experience cold enough temperature where an oil with a large range of viscosity would be advantageous.

Changing your oil more often won't prevent it but doesn't hurt.

Good! Normal. But expect for that tick sound to stick around when your car mileage gets up into the 100, 110k+ area, if you continue to Autocross

again, Congrats! and have fun. All I can suggest is don't buy stuff like M3 mirrors and crap you don't need. Save your money for tires!

I onced read a looooong time ago in HA.com that if you add more oil than full for the AutoX it helps because when cornering hard, the hiogher level helps in oil entering the oil feed from the carter.
I've tried that 2 times and it seemed to help; I usually add 1/8 more oil than full before an AutoX; theorically I should drain it after, but I have not done none of the times; the engine just expels the excess some way (or burns it idk because my car does not burn oil).

I beat a couple of integras, civics even beat my friends automatic G35 but he cant drive.. haha. I say do it! The Tiburon drives awesome and I really think its worth it. As far as 2nd to 1st gear changes, I know its not good. If you know how to rev match you can do it without grinding your gear box. Car is fine now, did an oil change cleand it up, and its driving fine.

I had the same problem. It's just oil missing from the HLA's. Let the car idle for a few minutes afterwards and the oil should return to the HLA's and get rid of the ticking. Some cars may take longer for this to happen. I would also add a little extra oil for race day.

The RD Tib is an AWESOME autocross car. At the TX meet, there was only me and a friend with a stock motor RD that raced against like 30 other GK's, Elantras, and a S/C GTO. I came in first by a large margin and he came in 4th just after the GTO. I'm betting he could have come in 3rd with another try.

You guys should definately find your local autocross club. It's usually free to watch. But that will only make you want to race. wink1.gif
