I am interested in autox, and would like to know how much does it cost for you to participate in a race and how badly does a race wear out brake pads and tires, etc?

Answer v2.0 (damned wireless kicked me off as I was posting)

There are lots of variables...

For instance:

Events here in Vegas are about $60. WA events where 187sks is are around $20. You can get a SCCA membership and save money on each event, but the membership may end up costing more if you don't go very often.

Brakes/tires depend on the course. The tighter, windier courses here in Vegas will wear out the tires faster than the longer, more straight courses 187sks races in up in WA.

Check with your local SCCA chapter (http://www.scca.com/) and maybe drop by a few races to see how the courses are layed out, talk to some drivers and event coordinators and see where it goes from there.

Well, entry fees can be looked up based on what clubs you'll run with but could vary greatly. I've paid anywhere between $20 and $75 for entry fees. Some clubs require membership fees and some don't.

A set of Falken Azenis RT-615k tires last me about 15-20 autocross events plus 20k or so miles of daily driving. Racing surface will have more to do with tire wear than course design in general, but a lot less to do with it than driving style. How you drive will heavily impact how long your tires last. Tire selection is pretty critical. A set of Toyo Proxes 4's lasted me 3 autocross events before they were completely destroyed. You will kill a set of all seasons very quickly and you'll be slow while doing it.

A set of performance (not even racing) brake pads last me about twice as long as a good set of tires.

In comparison I burned up a set of the same tires and brake pads in a single lapping day.

Just for fun here is a video of one of my events:
