Has anyone ever seen a convertible do well in auto cross?
 

I have never once seen a convertible at an auto cross or road rally. I guess its because handling sucks when you dont have a roof. But have any of you ever seen one at an event and actually do well?

I've seen a bunch of Variettas used in drifting competitions.

as OTEC posted. I have seen S2ks and Miatas do very well in autoX.

What they said ^ S2000 and Miata are very popular and I have seen some Corvettes and M3's do well. And you may consider the Lotus Elise a convertible. It's more about the driver than the roof :shift:

Really it depends on the platform. The Miata and S2K are setup to be rigid convertibles. On the other end of the scale however, a Mustang or Camaro is designed to be a hardtop, then gets it's top cut off. This would probably make it less stable than it's aforementioned counterparts. Also keep in mind that any car can be made rigid, the Miata I posted looks like it has a cage for example.

At an autox level of competition, you're set to gain more time by simply practising with what you have. Your tires, suspension, and engine are also still under par. Once all of those are sorted, and you STILL can't get the wheels to do exactly what you want; then chassis rigidity might be a limiting factor.
