Vac-amsterdam -hotels ???

I'm taking a VAC to europe this fall and plan on staying in Amsterdam (a home base to travel to other places) and need a hotel recommendation. Not looking for a Best Western or Ramada, ect., want something with some local flavor in the center of town near the rail station.
