Pricing and Classification - keeping you informed about the Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service

New Prices Effective January 8

The Governors of the U.S. Postal Service voted November 14 to accept the Postal Rate Commission's recommendation to increase most postal rates and fees by approximately 5.4 percent.

This price increase - the first since 2002 - is needed to fulfill a federal law passed in 2003 that requires the Postal Service to place $3.1 billion in an escrow account by October 1, 2006. Without this federal mandate, it would not have been necessary to raise prices in 2006. Among the adjustments, the single-piece rate for First-Class Mail will increase from 37 cents to 39 cents, and the postcard rate will increase by one cent, to 24 cents.

The Board of Governors set Sunday, January 8, 2006, as the effective date for the new rates and fees.

New rate and fee tables <http://www.usps.com/ratecase/_pdf/Notice123Jan2006.pdf> are available online at usps.com/ratecase <http://www.usps.com/ratecase/>. Downloadable tables will be available shortly.

CyberShark 12-20-2005 08:49 AM

That's it, I'm going to start paying my bills online..

REDZMAN 12-20-2005 10:27 AM

This is sorta funny considering this is the first year USPS turned a profit in like 15 years.

RedShark 12-20-2005 10:46 AM

it's a good thing that i don't have to pay when i ship things usps. i get it free from work. but shhhhh don't tell. lmao.gif

ToXiC_LovE 12-20-2005 01:07 PM

Well, it's not TOO much of an increase. Remember when it cost what, 27 cents or something to send a letter? Damn.

Haha, I have to sell a bunch of textbooks on ebay in January after I move (amongst other garbage). I hope people will like having to pay $20 for shipping on a book.

SwiftTiburon 12-20-2005 06:15 PM

That kind of sucks..but heck I only send regular mail through usps anyway so this doesnt really affect me. tongue.gif

Lil Tiby 12-21-2005 08:30 AM

It would be nice if they actually went down instead of up. lol I usually only send my bills through the mail and those occasional packages. I feel sorry for people who use USPS a lot.
