Wow, at first I backed up the federal government and Bush a little when everyone blamed them for the floods, but now...............I'm 100% backing my federal government. It was soooo apparent that their local government used and abused the local people. They took their tax money and gave it to the 5% of the rich that actually lived there. Their government should die, be cut up into a million pieces and be fed to the crawfish so that the people can then have the biggest crawfish feast the state has ever had!
I made a field trip with my architecture class to see how things were and to design a house and system that would withstand the floods. I chose the Gentilly area and singled out a block within that was at the highest flood point: 10 feet under water!!!
The water rose well above the walls in people houses. Even a year later, there is a dead silence in the residential neighborhoods. Fema trailers were parked in front of some of the houses. While 50% of the other houses were demolished or abandoned with doors left wide open.
I got the chance to talk to a guy named Jesus (hay-soos). He was forced to stay in his half flooded house because he still had a second floor. Even though his first floor was a complete waste. He had plywood boarding up every opening downstairs. We asked him what he thought about everything. Boy was he pissed! Does he blame Bush? Hell no. He's wondering where his 20 years of tax dollars went?!?!?! He told me to look at the streets. They were in shambles. I hit a pothole driving in that was 5 feet round and over a foot deep. Some parts had rises that were a foot tall. After Jesus pointed out all the deformaties to me, he then made sure we knew that all that was there BERFORE the flood!!!! In the 20 years that he had lived there, they have never paved his neighborhood. In fact, they haven't paved it in 35 years!
He then wanted to know where the tax dollars went for the levees? They were supposed to build them up 35 years ago. They had 35 years to do something and took everyones money for it. But nothing has been touched.
He also wanted to know where the FEMA money went. Millions of dollars has been given to "New Oleans Victims", but Jesus has not recieved one dollar of it. Here is a guy that returned to his home. He didn't flee to Houston only to stay there like the rest. He returned home to try and save what life and home he had left. But then found, like the rest, that there was nothing left to return to, with no support from his government. (But it's not like he got any before the flood either.)
Many of the businesses shut down. Therefore, no jobs = no money for them to repair their lives.
So I said "thank you........." to Jesus and drove around to the north side of the neghborhood. Not 5 freaking blocks later did we hit the upscale houses (mansions). The streets were freshly paved. They had curbs and sidewalks. The houses looked more like hotels rather than like the single bedroom shanties that were down the street. And more importanly, they were only a few feet higher in elevation which protected them from the flooding.
The mayor lives there....................
So if any of you anti-federal government shitheads still believe that our government had anything to do with this catastrophy, then I'm telling you to go see it for yourself. Go see how their city's goverment sucked the lives and money out of their people only to support themselves.

I think you missed the point.
Jon, thanks for the info man, this is not the first time I've heard it. The mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana both need to be drawn and quartered.

ONe of the execs here at Harrah's Casino Corporation is from New Orleans. nice guy, little flakey, but still a nice guy. As he says he survived "the ethnic cleansing" that Katrina brought to that great city. It is his opinion that the City and State were waiting AND hoping for a hurricane would hit that would devestate the less rich areas of the city so they could start over.
Ye, only a few news programs actually showed the truth of how the government there just screwed all the people there over. Everyone was so fast to blame Bush, and blame him for everything, that they didn't take the time to look at how corrupt that government was.

Thanks for that Jon!! So many people come to quick assumptions without looking at any facts, or even going to the problem places, and it's usually so different from what they first assumed.
