For Rent: Shuttle Hangar, Runway
NASA Wants Tenants For KSC Facilities
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- One of the world's largest buildings. Historic landmark. Excellent view of Central Florida. Terms negotiable.
That might as well be the classified ad for NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building, not to mention launch pads, a runway and just about other shuttle-related facility at Kennedy Space Center.
NASA wants to rent the launch pads where moon missions and shuttle flights began and find tenants for the Vehicle Assembly Building, and the shuttle runway and hangars.
The possibilities are out there. Sierra Nevada Corporation is building a mini-shuttle. It could land here. Boeing wants to market an Orion capsule. It could use a hangar or checkout building. Bigelow Aerospace is building inflatable space stations. United Space Alliance wants to keep flying the shuttle on a commercial, moneymaking basis.
The vision is a busy space center where many space projects are going on all at once and where the ghosts of all the old legends could look down at many following in their footsteps.
Right now, it's only a vision. NASA is waiting for responses to its "for rent" signs.
