Ontario Insurance HELP!
Hey all you Ontario guys. I need help, reference, advise w/e you want to call it. Im so close to getting my 2000 Black Tib SE (5spd, used w/ 76 000 km), but insurance has ruined that chance. They want $4200 cnd for the year with me (I'm 16) as occasional driver and my 40 year old dad as primary. Now I have looked around and tried switching insurance companies, but I have found I have one of the cheapest ones insurance companies around. My family pays $4000 cnd for 4 drivers and 2 cars (98 intrepid and 02 vitara 4wd) Everyone is insured on both cars. Now with one car with only me and my dad on it. They want double!! WTF is up with that?!? The car is gonna cost me $10 000 cnd + taxes etc. Come out to like 180 bux a month. No problem, but then 300 bucks a month for insurance. Grand total coming to 480!!! I can't afford that. Well I can, but I won't have much money on the side for gas, and other shit. I'm 16 years old and have a part time job. My parents can't pay for it cause they got there own shit to pay for. So what I'm asking for is how I can get around this. Any methods, scams I can do? Any one got a really good insurance company I can switch to? Any ideas at all other than (move somewhere else, get another car etc)? Guys I'm begging for help. Tiburon has been my "dream" car since I was 10-11 when it first came out in 97 and now its in my hands, but insurance has taken it away. Also what are the rates you guys in Ontario are paying for on your tibs. If its cheap explain to me how you did it. Also I must add my family has a "clean" record. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!
Ok, first off.. Where in Ontario? I am in the Kitchener/Waterloo area and have had a pretty good dealing with my insurance company.
I am paying 120(cdn)/mth. full coverage including rental. There are a few key factors.
.. please keep in mind, things are different for many people
1) Your age, is a big thing.. after 18 I believe you start to notice your rates drop.. then at 25 again. Even thought your insurance company sees your father as the primary, you are still considered "high risk" because of your age.
2) Find out, if they have included a 'multiple vehicle' discount. I mean, if your family has 3 cars under the same company, why wouldn't a company give you a better rate. (usualy around 5%).
3) If your house is under the same company.. many companies will give you a discount on that too.. well, mine has (another 5%)
4) Increase your deductable.. (300-500). I know if is a bad word.. but as long as you don't do something stupid.. like run up your windsheild when you were drunk one may24, of your mini-van.. things should be ok.. But keep 500.oo set aside, just in case.
5) I don't know if this is just mine or what.. my tib, is market down as a FX, not a SE.. shrug.gif
6) Many companies give discounts for anti-theft devices.. some don't.. find out.. (another 5% off, providing it is installed by a reputable company, and you have proof of that).. NO.. the Club does not count as a Anti-theft device.. it is a stupid thing.. cut the steering wheel, away you go.. stupid stupid stupid..(the tib was one of the top 10 vehicle stolen in my area, because of it size, 3 can fit into an ocean container.. Yes, i measured it out here at work smile.gif ).
7) As a new driver, I am summing(sp*) you are.. if you go thru Young Drivers.. or whatever.. the companies usualy give a discount because of that.. remeber.. you are 16, want a sporty car.. they see you as a inexperienced driver.. hence high risk.
8) You touched on something that I did. Another vehicle.. Sure, get your tib.. but store it somewhere (that way you can save up a bit here and there for toys).. but buy a little s**t beater.. I bought a 88 Aerostar.. and was paying 40.oo.mnth for it. Drive the beater around to get you from A to B .. so, you can show your company your a resonsable driver.. What could you possibly do to a minivan!!.. (if they only knew!).
Many people may have different opinions.. this is what I found worked for me. It is, just my opinion so take it as that.

If you live in the GTA, I regret to inform you that if you own a Tiburon, you are screwed for insurance. It is a very expensive car to insure. Especially if you are 16 years old. I am almost 30 and I pay $2500 a year and I have all my insurance with one company and a clean record, I have been driving for 13years.
Ontario Insurace is basically Highway Robery, and even better, you have to pay for it.
Nice eh.
Sorry dude.

HA HA HA! u know what? i got same problem, i was in ontario they charged me 9600 a year, they wanted me to pay 760$ monthly JUST INSURANCE. I got 2 speed ticket no accident im 21. SCREW ONTARIO, my suggestion is you find a friend on the québec side and insure to his house, thats what i did, now i pay 1600$ a year, thats 140 a month roughly... i told the lady insurer she was crazy and at taht price i should buy a porshe and leave it uninsured in my drive way... shessh
The Tib is the worst rated car by the Canadian Insurance Institute (or whatever it is called), so you are going to pay a premium for it. Sorry dude, but if you want a Tib and don't have someone in another province you can insure it through, you are pretty much SOL. In addition, watch out for modding cars in Ontario, the insurance companies there are starting to refuse coverage for cars with certain mods (such as lowering springs).
I have G2 licence...i guess I am SOL 02.gif. I've called around and checked so many places, but the Tib is just way to much. Damn insurance...anyone know if that law about insurance rates is going to be passed anytime soon?
One way is to find a relative out of province. another way is to insure it under your dad only, and leave your name out. you are still covered if your dad lends you the car to drive once in a while. who will know right? But obviously, you won't be able to use the insurance company you are with right now. They will know. If you know you are a safe driver (this is risky) you can also take off collision. set liability to $200,000 (make sure you don't injure anyone), and comprehensive to $1000. Depends if the company will allow this though.
I don't advice any of these steps, but if you really like the tib, drive really safe, and are willing to risk, these are some options i have taken BUT NOT ANYMORE. I was in alberta with one accident (sliding my wheel into the pavement, at fault). It wasn't as expensive as ontario, but it wasn't cheap. Just remember, if a claims does occur in these situation, you might be decline any insurance.
If you think it's too much trouble, you should get a really cheap car for a few years until your rate gets better. Hope this helps.
