Mysterious missile lights up the sky over the Pacific

Pacific Ocean (CBS8)- A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught on video Monday evening by a KCBS news helicopter.

The spectacular contrail could easily be seen up in Los Angeles, but who launched this missile and why, remain a mystery for now.

The magnificent images were captured from the KCBS chopper around 5pm. The location of the missile was described as west of Los Angeles, north of Catalina Island, and approximately 35 miles out to sea.

A Navy spokesperson tells News 8, this wasn't its missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in that part of the region.

On Friday, November 5, Vandenberg Air Force Base launched a Delta II rocket, carrying the Thales Alenia Space-Italia COSMO SkyMed satellite, but a sergeant at the base tells News 8, there have been no launches since then.

News 8 showed the video to Robert Ellsworth, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and a former Deputy Secretary of Defense.

He said it didn't appear to be a Tomahawk missile and said it would be safest to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.

Based on pure speculation, however, Ambassador Ellsworth said, with President Obama in Asia, perhaps this could have been a show of our military muscle.

"It could be a test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine underwater submarine, to demonstrate mainly to Asia, that we can do that," he said, stressing that it was just a theory.

There is no way in hell anyone would perform a test launch of an ICBM, and this WAS an ICBM, 35 miles from a major population center like LA.

Missiles often fail, go haywire, and have to be destroyed, when they do, they have the potential to go any direction they please.... Including over a major city a mere 35 miles away. The potential consequences of that are monumental.

Also, we have no need to demonstrate our ability to launch missiles from Submarines to Asia or anyone else for that matter.

Our ability to do that has been well known for almost 50 years now.

This is very disturbing. The truly frightening part is that it was not aimed at us... Any third party launching an ICBM from American territory at another nation would be immediately interrupted as an American Nuclear strike on wherever the ballistics determine to be the target...

If this is indeed NOT an American launching, and i can't imagine anyone would be stupid enough to test launch a missile 35 miles away from 14 million people, then that means a foreign power has breached US territorial boundaries and initiated launch against parties unknown...

The consequences of this will be dire... The only entities i can imagine with something to gain by this would be Iran or North Korea, both of which have been accused before of breaching US territorial waters and causing disasters, both of which possess missile submarines, and both of which have a vested interest in seeing the USA falsely accused of such a launch.

This raises serious questions regarding the explosion on the Oil Platform in the gulf and the mysterious never-happened-before-or-since- center fuel tank explosion of TWA flight 800...

It might be a bit paranoid to assume that this was a 3rd party launch. Think of all the major military projects that occurred right under the noses of the general public in the past, only to be misappropriated as extra-terrestrial life or war-time attack. Then to turn up as some kind of equipment test decades down the road.

In reality if this was some kind of attack on our nation or another, there would be documented evidence of said devastation long ago. This was fired circa 8pm est, so at latest by 4am this morning we would have known. Plus I highly doubt that our military is that out of the know.

I'm awaiting the inevitable "swamp gas" excuse

It appears to be a demonstration of our power via a submarine missile launched toward the Pacific ocean at the day Obama is visiting Jakarta.

Even though the NAVY says it's not theirs, yeah right...

Someone leaned against the red button lol.

Did they say where it landed?

Stocker 11-09-2010 08:24 PM

I'm guessing, since it launched at sea and we didn't hear about LA blowing up . . . probably it landed at sea?

The radio news is calling it an airplane contrail in unusually high humidity. If Bush were still President we would already know it isn't terrorism-related.

In related news, I finally got my model rocket engines to fire properly . . . :paranoid:

the aliens had a leak.. jeez.. calm down everyone.

I for one love how the OP _knows_ it's an ICBM.

Also, Yes, TOTALLY related to the Gulf oil spill and to some 14 year old plane crash :fp:

That's bad news! Airplane contrails are made of microscopic mirrors and mind control spore
