Montana’s 85 mph speed limit

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/wp-...wayspeed65.jpg Today’s young drivers don’t believe it, but before 1973 and from 1995 to 1998, there really was effectively no speed limit on Montana freeways. In 1998, in response to a traitor’s motorist’s decision to contest his “reasonable speed” tickets all the way to the Montana Supreme Court, a limit of 75mph was imposed. That limit may be raised in short order. Four Montana legislators are sponsoring bills that could raise the speed limit to 85mph. This would tie a Texas toll road for highest speed limit in the nation and would be the highest speed limit on public roadways. The rationale? Simply to save time for drivers covering long distances on lightly-trafficked freeways. Should this occur, it will create a rather unique situation for those of us who own vehicles with late-Seventies speedometers. Given the fact that most speedos read a little high, you’ll be able to “peg” the dial on your 1980 Ford LTD without breaking the law. The times, they are a changin’! :shift: |
80 in TX was pretty cool, but it sucked gas down like crazy...

80-85mph going both ways out of town down I-10 for the past 6 years. But people do that regularly in town also.

having driven in montana many times, there is literally places where its straight for 50+ miles of flat, open land. plus, since there are just like 3 people on the road on those 50 miles, not much goin on anyways. just makes sense.

Home sweet home for me. I hope they do.

I drove on a test section of highway in Utah or Arizona that was 85mph. I got 28mpg on that section at 89mph. I was getting 38mpg at 79 (in a 75) or 42mpg at 64 in a 60.
I would trade for the time savings though. I still regret not making it to Montana before they got a speed limit back. |
