If your jurisdiction does not allow guns, you should look to see if you are allowed pellet guns. They have come a LONG way and are very high powered and just as lethal. You'll almost spend as much as a real gun too.

Not everyone in TX can get a gun. I can't get one in any of the 50 states. This is despite being an NRA Distinguished Expert (age 13) and Army Rifle Expert (age 17). I hit a car on my motorcycle and despite the other guy's insurance saying it was his fault, the DA went after me. I plead no contest to a felony rather than roll the dice on 3 felonies at trial with a PD. So... no alcohol, no drugs and no weapons were involved but I'm still too much of a threat to society to purchase a gun. An paranoid schizophrenic can purchase one though. No, I'm not bitter. Seriously.

 

Bear spray would probably be my home defense of choice if guns were not legal.
