Basically, the guy who shot the cop was just released from prison 3 weeks ago. The cop ended up on a foot chase trying to catch the gunman because he was a suspect in a crime that had just happened. They ran between a couple of houses and when the cop rounded the corner of one house, the gunman was standing there waiting and shot him. His partner drove up in the cop car, grabbed him and raced to the hospital, where he didnt make it. When the cop got shot, he was able to fire back and hit the gunman but he survived after being driven to the hospital in an ambulance. And when he got hit, he dropped his gun, which went off and hit an innocent bystander, but he was just grazed by the bullet in his leg.
So the community is mourning the loss of the cops life. He leaves behind a wife, a 4 year old (who just started kindergarten 2 days ago), and a 3 month old baby. The cop was on the force for 8 years, and was a decorated officer with multiple awards and recognition for being able to get guns off the street. They are saying the gunman will get life in prison, since there isnt a death penalty in NY. So that scumbag will be able to get a full college education in prison (something our wonderful Governor set up), full health care, be able to rent movies (another thing our awesome lawmakers passed), and have a cushy life while being a hero in prison for shooting a cop. One can only hope the prison guards make his life a living hell for years and years to come for what he did.
