RD1 AND RD2
RD1 = 96-99(yea i know in n. america they started in 97, but there a few out there)
RD2 = 2000-2001
RD i believe is in the VIN#
not to be confused with Beta 1 & Beta 2 which is:
Beta1 = 96-2001
Beta2 = 2003+
RD2 = 2000-2001

the Rd is the first and second tibs.. we refer to them as RD1 and RD2 to show some differences between them. Mechanically, they are almost the same.. with only a few minor details different. The first generation or "RD1" is from 1996 to 1999 (yes, there were a couple of 96s) and are easily distinguished by the compound headlights, a flattish hood, rounded rear window, and tailights that mimic the shape of the headlights.
The RD2 from 2000 to 2001 (there are no 2002 tibs) have the "quad" headlight design with the fairings going up into the hood, a rear hatch with the third brake light at the bottom of the window (which is why the window is no longer as rounded, but has a "tab" at the bottom to hide the light) tailights that come down to bumper level. It also has small "vents" in the rear bumper behind the tailights.
Over the years the RDs have gotten more content.. 1.6 (in europe) 1.8 engines giving way to the 2.0. Four wheel disc brakes, leather interior... the newer the car, the more standard all these features became.
I have heard RD refered to as "rider's delight"

the 1996's are the ones that first appeared in salons and made available to dealerships first including the very first shipments from korea. before 1999 hyundai didn't have production facilities in america.
