Im thinking of purchasing a used tiburon, a 1998, that has sat in a driveway for about 7 months or so. I got it to a garage, he checked it, no major problems except for the wheels. They are pretty rusted out here in montreal weather. I was wondering what would need to be fixed(calipers, brake pads ect...) and how much it would cost per?
A quick response would be really appreciated, as the person wants me to call them back soon. And btw, if it's going to be alot, don't be afraid to tell me, i've been shopping for awhile, so I have no problem walking away |
How much is he looking to get for it? Even if you have to replace rotors, pads, studs, etc. Its not really going to be to much depending on how bad it really is. You can get a nice set of dimpled slotted rotors for about 200. Nice pads arent to expensive.

Well lets see here? What exactly is rusted?
If the surface of the rotor is rusted from sitting on the drive way it should clear up once you give it a couple breaks. If it doesn't, and we're talking about the rust that meets the pad than you can get it re-surfaced. Probably 50$ all rotors to get them re-surfaced. If you choose to buy brand new rotors, OEM than you get probably get them for 30-40$ each at a local parts store. As calipers go if its surface rust, than sandblast them or get a steel brush and scrub them than repaint them. Sandblast won't cost you much, sub 50 for all 4 $. and paint 20$. If the calipers are shot or what not, go to a junk yard and find some. Probably run you around 150 for all 4. As far as pads go, those don't rust. Unless the pads are worn than you wont have to replace them. If they are OEM pads are 35$ for front 35 for back. If the knuckle is rusted, than that is just surfance rust and you shoulnd't worry about it. Any other questions? |
Wow, fast response, no, that's good for now. Thanks.

Give us some more info on it, we can probably direct you as to common problems, things to watch out for, etc.

Well it sat for 7 months, got moved here and there. 1998 Tiburon FX, 155K KMS, needs new windshield. I drove it, the wheels would grate 24/7, especially stopping. There was a ticking sound comming from the engine, my mechanic said there was a small whole in the exhaust. He said most of the stuff could be de-rusted, by as I live in montreal, the weather gets icy/slick, so I want good brakes for the winter, so I might want to replace them.
