CAI questions...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (HyundaiKitCoupe)</div><div class='quotemain'>this double-posting crime... is it because editing saves up space on the server? does there have to be a post in between yours even if the post in between has nothing to do with anything? nor any responds to your post? -there should be a scrolling banner at the top of the forum screen yielding people in advance to try and single-post. a reminder kind of like a road sign... maybe that'll prevent these things from happening and we can all be on our way.
... about the CAI, is there a way to lower the sound level of it (say a silencer) and how can that be done? thanks.</div>
#1.) Dbl posting is NOT a crime here....its just that if ppl werent reminded of it all the time, it would happen all the time....the example that REDZ gave has happened, if not here (this site is fairly new) then at the other Hyundai websites that the ppl here were or are involved with.
If, say, you post a question that you need a quick response on.....and no one answers you for 3 days GO RIGHT AHEAD AND DBL POST.....but ONLY to get the thread back up on the active topics list so ppl see it.....either yourself or an admin/mod should then copy everything from the 2nd post into the first, then delete the second post....AFTER someone else has responded to the thread.
^^^
My example doesn't happen often here, we are usually (99% of the time) very prompt w/ responses. and of that 99% of the time 90% of the time you will be answered w/in 10 minutes.
2.) Beleive it or not, the sound that a CAI makes is part of HOW it produces more power......CAI's are tuned ACOUSTICALLY to provide slightly more airflow. The resonance is pressure waves of air being sucked thru the pipe up to the TB and IM. If you silence this you WILL lose power....you might as well keep your stock air box in there if the noise levels bother you or your neighbors. BTW, MD doesn't have any noise level laws, that i know of (and i have friends who are cops, but none are troopers), that have ANY thing to do w/ the intake. Exhuast is different, though. and i don't remember the exact DB lvl allowed....but its got to be pretty high b/c all the "RICERS" (read Honduhs), at least in my area, have fairly loud exhausts.
3.) Welcome to RD :-) always good to have another east coast tib (especially another one from MD)

awsome, thanks tibwrcsbj! i was just curious--guess it's because i come from the www.wrc.com forum where there are no moderators. it's a great forum. but the sport is getting a little ugly. and with that the forum got crazy... so i turned the page.
you're right about the double posting. this is a pretty new site. perhaps there could be a warning "stop sign" .gif animation in the corner or something. i'd be more than willing to make you a neat .gif file. but if not than that's ok. i know better.
i'm happy to say that as a poster, i've encountered nothing but helpful posts here. most everyone knows what they're talking about or can help you with anything you possibly need an answer to. and the replies aren't just basic, they're in depth. it's almost like a service! i just want to say THANKS to everyone for being so helpful. and skillful. it's an enormous help.
it's funny because in Maryland, you hear so many ricers pass by with air intakes. they sound so horrible (as if that's the only mod on the car besides silver arch covers and yellow windshield wipers) it's nasty how they spend more on cheesy mods than simple, good ones.
there isn't any rules here obligating a driver to control the levels of sound on the exhaust, however i have a friend who had a turbo and CAI on his car that was so loud it hurt your ears. he got pulled over numerous times fir it. LOL.
the reason i would want ti silence my CAI (when it arrives) is because my Tiburon is an automatic. i chose the 2.0 over the 1.8 stick =( and intakes don't sound as good on automatics. but if sound equals power than i'm all for it! screw my annoying neighbors!
PS-hey, i'll post some pics of the M11's when they're on. i'm keeping them safe and sound in my basement for now. they're quite the rim. excellent quality if i might say so. i also asked for hyperblack (because there was no other option besides black or gunmetal) and i was surprised to get it silver coated--just what i wanted! i'm just waiting for those rotors. so july should be the swap month.

I have a cold air intake on my automatic, and personally, I think it sounds pretty damn good! Same with my friend's 02 Galant. They don't sound high-pitched and ricey, but they have a nice tone.

oh, no doubt about it! they ones that do sounds nice are great! but you know how in manuals, the revs;hence the sound, gradually decrease if you let off the gas--the pitch is more curved. whereas automatics when you let off the gas there's a frequency of noise and revs. in other words with automatics with ©AI, the pitch is according to how much gas is needed to gain speed. not by how much speed it already has.
so all i hear is BBBBBBrrrrrrBBBBBBrrrrrrBBBBBBrrrr all day when they pass the speedbumps. the humming is great, but the difference in driving sound is what would make me reconsider. it gets to my head after a while.
the reason i'm ordering one is for the horsepower, increased airflow throughout the engine, and longer engine life. but with AT it's that constant "you're either on the gas or not" sound. Automatics don't have as much low end torque as Manuals therefore you need to tap the gas more to "drag" the car around hence the revs/sound is either high or low. in Manuals it's one gear per speed so the revs/sound are accordingly pitched to the speed at which you are going at. it sounds more persistant.
i'm happy with my AT. it's just the CAI i'm willing to get silenced.
call me picky. if i wasn't, i wouldn't be driving a tiburon =)

why not do the auto to manual swap????
if you dont have to deal w/ traffic....or if you dont plan on upgrading the clutch too much...this would be ideal.
Me, i sit in rush hour traffic on the beltway (495), and w/ a stock clutch it was ok.....I've now got a Valeo VHR clutch and lightweight flywheel......its a little difficult to drive in stop and go traffic w/ this combo but im getting used to it.
And the traffic issues that i deal w/ aside..... its an awesome combo.

i was thinking of a swap because i have someone that can do it for me for cheap with transmissions he already has. but with my current status (495) and the transmission showing no problems since the day i got the car, i'm thinking of sticking to it for a while. i'm still getting that intake just because you need the sound to go with upgrades.
DETENTION!!!!!!
