Default US calls for ban of all in-car phone use

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...with-bluetooth

Updated at 1:45 p.m. ET: The government's transportation safety experts recommended Tuesday to ban all American drivers from using portable electronic devices — including cell phones, even if you use a hands-free device.

So would this means that car companies wouldnt develop hands free or bluetooth capabilities in the cars anymore if this passes?

That would include iPods and GPS devices.

it would probably be supported by car manufacturers who are integrating things like Pandora into their blue link systems.

Nope. Integrated electronic devices would still be outlawed.

The radio news I heard said GPS increases t3h safety so it would be allowed.

Some people want to ban ALL in car distractions, including radio, coffee, bagels, shaving, w/e . . . then you're left arguing with the voices in your head though so it's a wash if you're still distracted but fighting yourself.

The voices in my head tell me I'd be utterly f*cked if this passes...

My phone is my gps and media center, and would be my clock if it wasn't for the one in the car already...

i think GPS personally decreases safety.. but it might be different for everyone.. My brother is always looking at his to direct him everywhere and pays much less attention to actually driving..

a few times, I have caught myself looking at the 'pretty screen' more than i should.

You could be staring at a road atlas instead.....at least the GPS talks to you so you don't "have to" look at it. I'd be pretty pissed if I couldn't listen to a radio while driving. That's taking it a little to far IMO.
