Sorry if this is a repost but I wasn't finding much on sound deadening here.
I'm looking at dampening the sound I get a lot from the engine and exhaust but I don't know where to start.
I'm thinking of using something like dynamat or edead, does that require a separate adhesive or is it a peel and stick type application?
I was thinking of lining the trunk area and then the firewall and hood, but how thick is it usually? i'd be worried about the engine rubbing on the hood if i applied a deadener. Then if I had left over i'd use it on the passenger doors. Road noise isn't really an issue, it's mostly just the exhaust so I might also look at applying some under the carpet along where the exhaust runs.
Do you guys have any input on this and how much I should look into buying, 25 sq. ft? 50? and maybe if anyone has pics or even a small guide they could post up that would be great. I am on the verge of hating my car since I have to crank the radio to hear it and people always ride in my car and bitch about how load it is and how it sounds like crap. I think a quiet and solid ride is a much needed make over. Thanks bros or (hoes)

I used both dynamat and fatmat in my trunk for my stereo setup. Its backed with a tar like...sticky thing which you just peel the backing off and roll it on. Its not that thick at all, the fatmat I used was 0.05 inches thick, i think the dynamat is a little bit thicker, not by much though.

This is with about three layers of fatmat and a layer of dynamat, so it weighs a pretty good amount. All you have to do, is take a box cutter with a sharp blade, cut it to the size you need, then pull a little bit of the backing off at a time, roll it on with a roller (if you buy a kit, it usually comes with one, I REALLY recommend using one rather than just pushing it on, or else it peels off), and keep going down the line. As for the amount, I don't even know how much I used in my trunk, I believe it was equivalent to 3 and a half of the trunk kits you can get. If you know anyone at Best Buy, they sell it there usually, so if you could have them buy it for you, get it and if you need more just take another trip.
At fatmats website, you can get 50^ft for 80$, 100^ft for 130$.
Fatmat
Dynamat is quite more expensive if you get it direct from them, if you could find a retailer that sells it, it'll be a bit cheaper.
It also depends if you want to do one layer or multiple layers, more layers the more it'll insulate the sound.

Here is a post from over RDT of a member who had done extensive sound dead project. I believe he also listed the materials he used and where he got them.
Just to give you some more ideas and what exactly he did and went through to get it dead.
