I have this old set of gauges that came from a junk yard. clear plastic was all f***ed up on them and i decided to hit it up with some mcguires clear plastic cleaner and plastic polish from o'rileys for $7 each. Well, it turned out to be a COMPLETE sucess. It looks better then my stock ones that were scratched a couple of times by gently wiping dust off.

I heard this stuff also works on headlamps. My question is, would I be able to use the plastic cleaner/polishing system on my shift and radio surrounds?

No idea... ive used leather cleaner on plastic before and it worked so I dunno. Probably, try in an inconspicious area.

sure why not, it is made to be applied and buffed out. Buffing your radio surround and shift boot could be kind of hard, but if you just wipe it clean I'm sure it will act just like armorall. But why not just use armorall...

and of COURSE they can be used on headlights, that what they're made for. I am trying to find a thread I made with a specific McGuire's product that had before and after picture. A $10 WalMart buffer and a $5 bottle of McGuire's and my headlights went from yellowish scratchy to crystal clear (but still not quite brand new).

Amazing difference, try it out. And re-apply as neccessary.

you don't want to use armorall becasue it wears off. plastic polish is actually just what it says, plastic polish. the plastic cleaner removes scratches and the plastic polish fills in remaining scratches. it was an amazing difference. I just want to know if anyone's tried this clear plastic polish or similar on black yet.

i have heard that useing that mothers powerball thing with the plastic polish works very well, i am goign to try that when it gets warmer

DTN, to answer your question I tried some of my McGuire's on the crash pad (light black area) and it really brings out a nice shiny black from underneath. We'll see if it holds up to the AZ sun tho....

comes with cleaner, polisher, and abrasive liquid for deep polishing.

dunno about the paint, but i do know it's a two stage process. one cleans and removes scratches and the other fills in what's left over in scratches.

Tibby01: is that a clear polish?

it polishes any kind of plastic or acrylic. clear, transparent, colored...

* mothers polish can be found at most auto stores, even wal mart has them sometimes*
*note* only polish hard plastic. it will turn into powder when sanded. the softer plastic will not powder and will be difficult to polish. if it is flexable it is to soft. there are not a lot of things on the car that are hard plastic. most of the interior is soft plastic. test on unseen areas first.
*note* do not use anything other than hand sanding. machine sanding mayl make the plastic melt.

this is to show you how to polish plastic in and around your car. this is the plastic blank in the dash trim. to polish it, begin by sanding the texture off of it with 600g sandpaper til the texture is smooth. then follow with 1000g to knock it down some more and smooth it further.

now you are ready to use the plastic polish. apply it to the polishing cloth and buff til all the fine scratches disappear and a reflective finish appears. it should look like this when done.

I'm left in absoloute bewilderment. i can't believe plastic can get that shiny... i'm marching my ass out to my car right now to get the radio surround and shifter surround... pix to come.



ok, here's the pix.. it made quite a difference in reflectivity. i'd recommend doing this if you have some good elbow grease. i tested just 600 grit sand paper without 1000 grit sand paper in an inconspicuous area and it didn't work well at all. these are the results without sandpaper.
