Bandpass to sealed box
Those who have made this switch, what kind of sound difference will it be? Right now I have a 10" Boss Audio sub in a ported bandpass box to a sealed box with a 10" Rockford Fosgate sub. I'm using a 2 channel Rockford Fosgate amp that I used for the bandpass and will still use for the sealed box. The bandpass box is LOUD and you can hear me coming a mile away. I don't have to turn the volume up very high to get a lot of sound out of it. So what can I expect when making this switch?

It depends entirely on the boxes. The engineering can be done to either kind of box, so that it sounds almost exactly identical to the other. The stereotype is that a sealed box may not play as loud but it will go deeper, but YMMV

a ported enclosure is generally 2-3 decibels louder than a sealed box of the same size. The down side — the ported box isn't as accurate as a sealed box, and it won't play as low in the frequency range. In regards to the bandpass box: There's a little bit of overhang, a subtle resonance that you hear on occasion — it's not a big problem, but you don't get the same "stop-on-a-dime" sound that the sealed box delivers. The bass is so heavy that it tends to overwhelm the subtleties in your music. |
