Make sure you synchronize with iTunes first so that you can revert changes. You can jailbreak your iPhone by visiting www.jailbreakme.com and sliding the slider.
It used to be much more difficult requiring a slew of software and in some cases, hardware. It's entirely too easy now.

As a note, this works on both new operating systems. iOS4 version 4.0 and 4.0.1 (the bug fix which shows the ACTUAL signal level). You should upgrade to 4.0.1 first so that you do not have to revert your phone.
There is a problem when you jailbreak the phone, then upgrade, then jailbreak again. It does not want to perform the second jailbreak. It freezes up. The solution is to revert the phone back to before it was jailbroken and then jailbreak again by pointing the phone at jailbreakme.com and sliding the slider. It made me waste quite a bit of time before I figured it out.
