Well, I received it today all packaged nicely. GJ man.

I installed the OBD programs that were included on the CD but there were also some drivers in another folder. I never installed those drivers. 1. The folder says USB Driver etc etc and Im using a 9 pin serial 2. I have no idea how to install the drivers since theres no .exe

So I go hook up the interface to a GM 1998 Transport. Now theres a single green light on the interface.

I Connect the 9 pin to the laptop, start the OBD program.

It says Com1 OKAY. Than Error Interface Could not be found. Or Interface could not be detected using a different program.

THe car was on, I tried 3 different OBD programs.

Anyone have any ideas?

Those drivers are installed by searching for the driver when Windows recognizes a new piece of hardware. You can let windows search or you can tell it to search your CD-ROM for the correct drivers.

right click my computer, click on manage, click on device manager, then look to see if there is anything with a red x or a yellow question mark by it. If there is, then double click it, click on drivers and update driver. You need to put the CD in and tell it to search the CD.

I looked, there was nothing near the COM port under the management.

The drivers seem to me like they for the Serial to USB drivers.

try changing the com port, or have you? try all of them.

Check to make sure there was NO red X and NO yellow ? anywhere in your devices. Not just in com ports. If you click on view, then click on show hidden devices it will show all devices connected to your computer. It's really an important step.

It's the one that jay-m has in his FS threads. Its the multi protocol unit.

With all this comm port stuff, all the software I have been using checks for comm connection first, than checks interface. When it checks out the comm port it says "COMM 1 : OK , INTERFACE : Not detected (or something like that) "

Sorry, i just got in here now... i'm out of town for work and i can only get dial up internet service in my hotel room... sorry for the late response

tanc or everyone who is thinking or even got my odb scantool(s),

the usb driver folder in the cd that i have included is only for fellas who is using a usb to serial adapter cable! if you are using the regular serial/rs323 cable directly connected to your pc, then you dont need to install those drivers at all

i have included all those drivers stuff, tuning manuals, etc on the cd as a guide. it is a general package for everyone; but not exactly tailor made to what you need (unless you have requested it)

the 1998 pontiac transport uses the GM's J1850 VPW Protocol and that multi protocol unit should not have any compatibilty issues at all... i've used this unit a number of time on pontiac sunfire and a chevy cavalier a number of time and it worked like a charm. i just wonder if it is a pc comm port settings issue

btw, you can have all of the programs opened and offline mode, BUT dont run them all the the same time!

actually, do you have access to another car with obd-II? can you try it and see if the problem(s) persists? what about the tib?

i will pm you my phone number, i will help you figure this out

sorry for the late reply tanc,

- jay-m

When we say change the ports, go into settings of the program and find something that says "COM1 COM2 COM3 COM4" and change that sequentially and check it.

Make sure you let us all know how the problem turns out. I'm planning on getting one of these units.....

okay, I got scantool.net program working by changing the BAUD rate to 38400 or something like that from 9600.

The other programs I couldnt get working. There is no BAUD rate option for any of them. Just different ports to choose from.

Also, I wanted BR-Diagnostic to work, and I Couldn't get that working either. The program is this one : http://obddiagnostics.com/

Now where do I go from here? No other programs have settings I can adjust anything from.

Should I change port settings from Device Manger? Right now I changed the bit rate from 9600 to 38400, and it didn't help. Data bits is set at 8, Parity at None, Stop bits 1, flow control None. Driver version 5.1.2600.0 of the com port.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, set it to 19200 that's the windows default. You could try the other options as well(been a long time since i worked with serial ports). That funny number you're using dosn't make much sence.

81N is the standard setting. 8 bit words 1 stop bit, No parity checking. You're fine there. The most important thing to note is the com port. Which com port are you using?

If you have any questions regarding the com port you're using or it's settings, right click "my computer" click on manage, click on device manager, click the + symbol next to ports. It will bring up the list of ports.

Disregard the LPT ports, they are for your printer and any other paralell device. All we're worried about is serial devices. Open COM(whatever you're using) and click through the tabs until you find the proper information. It will tell you what the port is currently configured at. Every bit of info is in there. If it's too slow, you can speed it up as well, just gotta match the info in the program.
