Car is a 2001
The problem is that when i turn the key (first thing this morning it worked fine) i get nothing but one single click. I have had the battery tested, it was good. Had the alternator tested it was reading good. Can roll start the car runs fine, charges well, gauges read fine. Have checked grounds, terminals, connections. I have beat on the starter with the BFH ,still no go. When the car is running, after roll starting of course....if you turn the key(like the accidental trying to start the car when its allready started) the starter engages fine, shut it off try it again immediatly NOTHING............................

Please help

Thanks, Tom

Im going to attempt to remove what i think is a faulty starter. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what out of the ordinary tools i may need to do so.......like the ones that always pop up mid job like "oh damn i need a left handed metric adjustable to get to this bolt" kinda thing.

Also whats the best way to go about removing it, from the bottom or from the top? i will be working on the floor with just a jack and jackstands so no luxury of a lift or anything convienient like that.

Any tips/tricks will be greatly appreciated.

standard tools (I think.. think they are 14mm bolts) and you will need an extension. Two bolts hold it and some connectors. I think its easier to loosen it from up top and then remove it from under the car. Maybe someone has an easier way. Good luck.

oh its a jolly good time replacing a starter. lol.

its not hard, just a pain in the ass the first time you do it, after that, you wouldnt hesitate to change it again.

Youll figure out what you need to do but just so you know this is what your looking at,

after you take off the intake and such to get to the actual starter youll need to be under the car to take of the small wire with the female spade fitting on the starter, then youll need something like a 10mm wrench to loosen the nut holding the positive wire. Then youll need to get the bolts holding it in from the top (12mm i think) youll need a long ass extender or a few short extenders, then remove it from the bottom.

Putting it back on its even more fun! lmao.gif

thankx for the input.

I have figured it out and gotten it off( not to bad really), only to find out that the starter works like a dream. I had it tested at advance auto and its in tip top shape. so now its back to the drawing board on what the hell is wrong.

Thanks for the info.

I did search the site and found a few posts with about the same problem but no one seemed to ever have the answer or post back weather the problem ever got resolved. And im still just really lost on the whole the starter will spin if the car is running but not when its off thing????????

I got the starter off and had it tested at advance auto......is in perfect working order. So now im really lost.

All i know is i need the car fixed by monday and i havent the slightest clue of how to accomplish that. I guess its back to cleaning connections again.

Simple, i had the same thing happen and it had me confuzzled.

Check your positive terminal on the battery, im sure the smaller wire that runs to it either fell off or is corroded.

You hear the click because the starter has power from the small wire, its supplied by the ignition switch, the sound is the gear extending to engage with the flywheel as its normally retracted.

when the gear engages with the flywheel it touches the bellhousing and completes the circuit for the starter motor, it spins, once the engine starts you release the key and the gear retracts which breaks the circuit and the gear stops spinning.

If it has a solid connection at the terminal, then the problem lies somewhere else along the wire but i doubt it since its pretty easy for the wire to slip off at the terminal or become corroded past the point of functionability

From what your saying, it's most likely corroded wires, or a wire fell off, like he said. Sometimes you can't see that a wire is corroded, but it is on the inside of the wire. Could also be a bad ground wire, check that your grounds are making clean connections. Another thing, which my boss told me, try putting it in reverse when you try to start it. He has an S10 stick, and he had a good battery, everything worked good, but what happened was when he turned the key all he heard was "click". Turns out the starter gears was coming out, but tapping the flywheel so it couldn't start. I don't know if that could happen on our tibs, but it's worth trying at least. Takes all of two seconds.
