K, yesterday my muffler fell off my car on the highway at the weld (not the flange). It was an MBRP muffler (like two and a half years old).
I wanted to know if it is okay to drive maybe 5 miles without muffler (to muffler shop) w/o any internal engine damage. There will be NO backpressure really for that short drive and I have absolutely NOOOO low end power right now (cuz it's basically striaght through from the exhaust manifold). I'm not going to weld the old muffler back on, probably buy a new muffler any suggestions? Magnoflow a good choice? I don't really care about being quiet, just want the performance aspect of a true catback. I'm going to be leaving for the muffler shop in like an hour, fast replies appreciated. It was the OEM MBRP muffler (I believe..bought it off Chris) so the welds should have been high quality.... hmmm? |
yeah you can drive it to the shop... so dont worry much
im just wondering if the muffler was supported good by the hangers, maybe too much stress and less support cause it (yeah pics would help) about the mufflers, i would shop around some more... i wont settle for the ones the shop would be selling you, more likely it will be overpriced over all... that suck it happened to you man sad.gif ... good luck |
Having no muffler will cause zero damage to your engine. It'll just be loud as f***all and not very fun to drive.

The guy seemed pretty nice. I think he'll give me a deal on labor at least. Maybe he'll hire me too, i need a local job here. Anyway, the hangers keep the muffler and exhaust very stable. I'll take pics of their location. There is only one hanger holding the muffler on (on the widest part of the muffler) which is why it fell off onto the freeway. The other hanger is connected to the actual exhaust piping which connects to the muffler. The unique location where it broke caused the muffler to drag (backwards, so the tip was facing up and the other end was dragging) until it broke free out of that one rubber hanger. That's called poor build quality, plain and simple. Has nothing to do with hanger locations. There shouldn't be much stress on the muffler at all right there, and I can't see any evidence of something hitting it. That's just horrible!
I just hope yours was a defect or something and they're not all like that. |
Why spend money on getting new stuff. Just slap that sucker back up there and hang it with a muffler belt. lmao.gif LOL
Sorry it was just a perfect set-up. But anyway, i dont see any problem at all driving other than the chance of getting stopped for the loud noise. But you could just let the cop know your going to the shop to get it fixed. |
Well 2.5 years of stress on the weld... its not too horrible, but it shouldve lasted longer. Maybe you bottomed out on it a few times or something.
As for going to the shop, LOL you'll be fine. Running without backpressure is fine... you could run without the muffler for the rest of the life of the car with no ill effects. |
thx guys. i've never bottomed out in the car. the muffler was in good condition when i got it. It's just a manufacturing problem. I hope, as well, that all MBRP's are not the same. Many members have had MBRP catbacks for years and they have not posted problems. I guess mine was just the exception.
Good news: I found a really nice custom automotive shop that does all custom work and really likes my car. i think I'll be doing lots of business with them starting with this muffler weld. I'm working on finding the correct muffler belt for my tibby. rofl... lmao.gif not but really, I ordered a magnaflow 2.25in muffler with a long inlet to allow enough room to re-weld to "over the axle" exhaust pipe. It gets here Wednesday and I should be driving normally agaion by Wednesday night. Hopefully the shop can install my front rotors too. That's be sweet. (damn 97's and there rotors that are attached to the wheel hub....BS). thanks for replies. Yeah I've been driving around fine, just got some laughs and shooken heads as people passed me. Then I just held up my muffler for them to see and their faces were like "Ohhh...." Idiots. Oh well, all is well now. Hopefully. curious, how much do Magnaflow mufflers run on the internet or local shops around you guys? -patrick SHEEET.... I just realized how much room i have to work with to cut off the old weld and weld on the new Magnaflow muffler. That's the funniest thing I've seen in a little bit. I don't think I've ever seen a muffler fall of like that. It would be a perfect time for a muffler belt. Guess it's time to upgrade to a Motoria Catback eh Patreezy? |
Hmm, I'd contact MBRP about it, tell them you are NOT happy.
Also tell them you are the first owner. LOL See what they will do? |
