We call it the Beta because thats what it is.
Just because the sirius has a 1.8 & 2.0 dont assume its the beta, it also has the 2.4L and is the 4 cyl you see in the Santa Fe, Sonata, and Optima. The engine code for the 1.8 2.0 and 2.4 for the sirius is G4GM, G4CP, & G4JS.
The Beta comes in 1.6 1.8 & 2.0 (G4GR, G4CN, & G4GF; G4GC for the Beta II) and is applied in the Tiburon, Elantra, Tuscon, & Spectra. Type in "List of Hyundai Engines" in Wikipedia if you want more info...
