Recent rain storms in the Denver area meant big trouble for the tib. Had lightning strike a lamp post the car was parked under at the local king soopers and had quite a bit of wiring fried in the tib. Shop says they can get the harnesses fairly cheap used from sources unknown but the ecu would have to be new, something about "coding the vin to memory", so the new ecu would have to come from the hyundai at $218.

Do I really need a new one and does "coding the vin" really matter? HMA says it's necessary and that's what the shops going on. Looked around here at the posts but no one has reported anything dealing with this before so I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting jerked around.

Also if anyone knows how to distinguish ecu markings on the outside to determine 2.0l and such.
Thanks

There's no 'Coding the vin'. I'm running a 1998 Elantra 1.8L ECU in my Tib, pass emissions and the car runs fantastic.

ford runs a coded ecu which calibration codes and stuff like that it has to have that certain code or it wont run....different sensor parameters and stuff like that

now for us hyundai cars the ecus are interchange able with:

all 1997-2000 elantras (doesnt matter if its 1.8 or 2.0)
all 1997-2001 tibs (again doesnt matter...)

THE ONLY EXCEPTION is the REV A. vehicles some people have had some issues with it....

also

make sure if he says hes replace the harness that he actually does it instead of just sayin he did....

"Coding the VIN"???
What kinda bull crap are they trying to pull
Go to a junker and get an ECU
And $218 is NOT a new one, new ones are like $800 from Hyundai. So they are probably trying to sell you a used one that they got somewhere.
