Well, as the title says, my key has died. There is some allignment in my door that is off, and it bends every key that I have, including my mountain of spairs. But, the thing that I don't understand, is that I can use them to open the doors, just not turn on the ignition... So, so far I've been attacking it with pliars... trying to bend it magically back into a straight shape.
Anyone else have this happen? I'd like to be able to fix the thing, because ordering another one from scratch will take a few days, and it's a hastle, as I'll have to drive to the dealership and present my liscence, registration, blah blah blah. |
I accidently tried turning the key before I had pushed it all the way into the door. It bent it a little, still functional - but it was much harder to insert into the ignition than it was the door with just the minor bend.

Try turning the steering wheel a little bit while inserting the key. You could have pulled it out too early. wink1.gif

Just my luck, I put it in a vice to try and straighten it out, and bam. Vice breaks...
So I have a key stuck in a vice, and in the midst of trying to remove it, crack. i now have two keys. Blah. At the rate this is going I'll have to have this moved to the Gripes and Complaints section, lol. I'll try those tricks with the remaining keys ^. But they're in pretty rough shape, so who knows. |
Wow that's 2 members with broken vises in as many weeks!
Stop buying made in china vises from harbor freight people! ******** You might ask one of those mobile locksmith folks to have a look at your car to see if it can be set straight. It's got to be cheaper than continually having spares made. |
My spare key is the opposite, it will start the car but wont unlock it.
The one that wont unlock the door has minor wear on the very last raise that wont let it turn the locks. |
A LOT of people never do the standard maintenance on their locks that need done. Ever lubricate it properly? Do some searching online, you'll find some interesting stuff.

Add me to the list of broken vises lol

I had this key eating issue in my last car. It was a mazda mx-6.
In the winter I could go through a key a month, no problem. The summer was a little easier on me, it was only 1 every 3 months. The keys used to get really bad so I would go to the stealership to get a new until they started charging 30 bucks a key. This issue destroyed my steering column lock to the point where it would start locking up while driving. I would suggest getting this repaired asap. |
My actual steering column is fine, it's just the door that eats the keys. I have to insert the key, then pull in out about 1cmish, and then turn. And if it's any more/less than that: gobble, gobble, bent key.
