HELP! check engine light came on

Ok so my check engine light came on about 3 days ago.. I was driving it normal and then the orange letters of death popped up. I went to autozone and OBD-II ported it up and IT says I either have a defective EVAP canister, or somekind of selenoid defective? Do you guys think its my charcoal sensor that went out??? Idk the service record of my car but Ive had it for about 28k and theres 193k on the car. Any information will be greatly appreciated

Go to any place except AutoZone and get the actual code the computer is giving out. It will probably start with the letter P followed by four numbers. Without that, we would be troubleshooting largely in the dark (can't be very much help).

Ok thanks stocker I think I got the code number at home

Code came up as P0411 EVAP system Purgle flow low

That's not the correct number. I'm guessing it's actually a P0441 code. You have either a clogged or disconnected hose on the Evap emissions system, or a defective purge control valve. There is a test procedure involving testing voltages and resistance. I'd suggest either bringing it to a shop or getting a service manual.

yeah it was p0441

dckeith18 Sep 11, 2011 10:00 PM

So yeah.. the reason im asking i really wouldn't care if that peice is broken i imagine it doesn't really affect driving.. but anyways I need to get my car inspected and its been out of inspection for the last month.. I had to put in a new rear crossmember... then control arms and bushings on the spindle.. so here i am now got it ready to get inspected, so my final question is what is the sweet spot for the mileage on a 1999 tiburon for it to not be showing up on the emissions test after I disconnect the battery?

Stocker Sep 12, 2011 06:28 AM

After you disconnect the battery, CELs all reset . . . and come right back if the problem is severe, or stay off for up to 3 drive cycles if the problem is minor. Do not be surprised to find the OBD status as "pending" or "not ready" if they put it on the inspection station's machine before the CEL pops up.

BTW depending on what's wrong with it, a faulty EVAP system actually could affect normal operation of the car. It's not that complicated a system but it IS all buried and a PITA to reach most of it without a lift. Recommendation: fix it.

Ok fixed it with a used PCV and EVAP canister.. I want to make sure this sh*t is ready to go for emissions, How many miles must i drive?
