Header Noise
I have the Shark Racing 4-2-1 headers on my 2001 Tib, which is coupled with the SR cat-back, a 28-inch resonator, and a "free-flow" cat. I get a ton of raspy exhaust noise. One thing I'm going to be doing soon is replacing the cat with something a little less empty - I think this will help a lot. However, I think a lot of the noise is probably coming directly from the headers - I think the steel is not too thick.
First off, anyone else running these headers feel they make too much noise? Am I just crazy and need to look at more muffling in the exhaust itself?
Second, I'm wondering if wrapping the headers with heat wrap will make any difference in the sound. I've never worked with heat wrap, so I don't know what kind of material it is, but I think with a good, tight wrap it would have to muffle the noise somewhat. Any input into how much wrap it will take? Looks like the standard is 1" wide and 25' increments.
Anything else I can do to tone down the sound?
TIA

Ironic you should ask. I have the Sr 4-1 headers and they are super loud. I was gonna wrap the this weekend but they are calling for rain all weekend so it will have to wait 02.gif
most of your noise is coming from the 'race cat'. when i did my header install like 4 years ago, i put the race cat on..... for 5 min.. then i ripped it off cuz it sounded like absolute crap.. put a stock cat on, get a better resonator, or glasspack, and it should sound alright, still ricey, but alright.
i used 2" wrap, but 1" wrap will make your life alot easier. it didn't really help with noise, but i did it more to lower engine temperatures. i used a Summit brand 18" glasspack with a CATCO high flow cat.
