On the front of the block to the left of the transmission it should have stamped in it 2.0 or 1.8.
Of course, your car may have been a 2.0L originally, and someone may have swapped a 1.8L in before you bought it.
If I remember right, only the "FX" models got the 2.0L. The base model's got the 1.8L (97-99). Is yours an "FX"?
Also you can check your VIN with your insurance company. Their database should indicate engine displacement (2.0L vs 1.8L)

? Random comes in and has what sounds like a wrong answer? That strikes me as unusual times 2!
The 1.8 and 2.0 Beta 1 share a head. The Beta 2 has longer valves. What's more, the B1 exhaust valves are longer than the intake valves. Measure the valve lengths and compare to specification for your head.
Of course it could also be that you left something out in the valvetrain (spring seat), or even that you got exhaust valves instead of intake! There's no telling really till you make good measurements.
From hyundaitechinfo.com:
the 1998/2000 (I checked, they're the same online) 1.8/2.0 Beta 1 has 102.34mm (4.029") intake and 104.8mm(4.1259") exhaust valves with 5.965-5.98mm (0.2348-0.2354") diameter intake and 5.93-5.95mm (0.2334-0.2342") exhaust stem diameters.
the 2001 2.0 Beta II changed to 114.34 mm (4.5016 in.) intake and 116.8 mm (4.5984 in.) exhaust valve lengths, with 5.965-5.98mm (0.2348-0.2354") intake and 5.950-5.965mm (0.2343-0.2348") exhaust stem diameters.

well ive figured it out, autozone has the wrong number in their system for tiburon valves, because i ordered them from advance and they happen to have one intake valve and it matches
so now another week of waiting for all my parts to be here
