8mm Vac lines added and tomorrow I am going to get the final measurements for a MAP sensor. My new goal is to make this universal between MAP and MAF vehicles I am going add a flange for the MAP sensor and make a small adapter to fit the IAC bung onto that. The good news is printing has started and Sunday I will convert the print into a usable mold and create the fiberglass mockup for test fitment and flow testing. REAL progress!

It feels great to finally make this long brainchild a reality! :happyanim:

I do feel like I owe you for some of the ITB R&D I've stolen. :P

But I don't suspect mine will be totally done in time. We'll talk

I've just realized this was for ITB setups. Connect the runners in one piece and, if it flows well, you could have a winner for everyone else (single throttlers) who can't afford an $800 air-ram.

Not cheaper than the air ram. Unlike the air ram, a standalone or piggyback would be necessary.

To be honest this was envisioned from the ground up for boosted applications. Adding a flange at the front would be quite simple but I doubt it would be as easy as piping the runner directly to the head. There is wave tune and other things to consider when relying only on the piston vacuum to feed the motor. Not to say it can't be done, but with the 48mm feed I have and the short 90mm runners that's not going to work well in an NA motor. In fact if I am doing all the math right in my head, that would kill top end power. The setup Blitz is using is perfect for N/A MAP cars because it uses the fat runner with nearly the correct length for the N/A beta so it has the feed and a wave tune (4th or 5th I'd assume) needed.

It all comes down to what the flow simulation and flow bench tests show.

Pretty much this.

Materials and time considered I could possibly this into that $800 price range if it were something to sell. The carbon twill I am using is considered "2nd quality" so it's not as pretty or strong, but i am testing the final to pressure and covering it in this colored stuff for a cosmetic layer:

I suppose if interest were there I could put together one for stock applications, but it would be a dress up part, not so much for performance.

I'll see how testing goes. If the mock up shows promise and there is a way to make it for less than the air ram then I'll gladly consider putting all of this equipment to use.

Then I can justify the cost to the wife

Most of the infusion kit arrived yesterday: Attachment 2131

Attachment 2130

I was able to buy the epoxy (not yet arrived) and vacuum pump separately to save money over the full kit. Also the epoxy I invested in is made for high temp applications such as valve covers.

Here is the red stuff for the cosmetic layer:

And of course raw carbon for the structural layers:

I am going to practice on a few parts I have laying around and start with fiberglass; but after I am sated with the quality I am going balls deep on some plenum action.

I need to recoup some of the cost of this kit as well, so the goal is to start wrapping and even fabricating components. I already have people chomping at the bit for my custom aw11 kit.

That's pretty cool man. Nice to see our old RD guys growing up moving onto new, big achievements whilst faithfully sticking with the original Tiburons all these years.

Tibbi Dec 2, 2015 09:25 AM

I've wanted an RD since the 90's. Now that I can finally afford to mod it I plan to do things right.

This won't be my last either. I still plan to collect at least another RD2 for a later project and an RD1. Plus the RD2 front swap on an Elantra wagon probably in the next 18 months (that will be the project I take on after the MR2.)

Tested the infusion system this weekend with decent results:

Attachment 2135Attachment 2136

Sadly the bag came slightly undone (pin hole leak) after a few hours and after figuring out how that happened I know how to prevent that in the future. Basically a small piece of the peel ply shredded off, was stuck under the tape and when the resin infused through it the heat mixed with the light expansion opened a small hole between the plastic film and the tape. Lessons learned. With luck the wrap will be salvageable as the seems to have happened over time. I had [as near as one can get] perfect vacuum that held prior, so with luck the epoxy hardened enough before the leak started. I used the auto bezel as a test anyway so it can be tossed after the conversion if it's jacked up.

I will continue tonight with the double din bezel tonight hopefully with better results. :beercheers:

If all goes well by the end of the week I'll have the cluster and driver door card insert wrapped. I also plan to have my first fully fabricated parts molded by the weekend.

For once, Ron Paul meme appears to be correct. Good job so far.

It's been forever since I last updated this. I am still working on the prints and figuring out how all of the molds will work. Meanwhile I am honing my skills on some smaller projects as well.

There has been an enormous amount of feedback asking for one of these that clears an Airram as well, so once this is done I'll do some modifications to the design. I am also in the early stages of designing a rear strut bar that will clear the rear seats for the addition of a harness. There are a few goodies in the works and soon my wrapped interior will be done.

Lots of goodies in the works this spring.
