Is there any benefit to putting a 1.6 Beta1 gearbox on a 2.0 for closer ratios? Its been discussed a few time over here, but never tried, however I have access to a cheap one, has it been tried on here?
I know the downsides is poorer fuel economy (if I was bothered by that I'd have a Prius) and lower top speed, but as its illegal to go faster than 70mph on UK roads I'd rather get there a bit quicker.

I would say both. Although I had a 1.6 Accent pushing 150+ whp with a turbo and I was just fine stock gearbox, stock clutch even...still works just fine after 3 engines (had a few boost creep issues and my hose assembly was bad) Not sure if its the same 2.0 gearbox or 1.6 as what we have here in the states but I have heard that the 1.6 shares the same setup internally as the 2.0 gearbox you can try switching out the gears from the 1.6 into the 2,0 and see if that works...
The 1.6 is very very close, but uses different bearings etc. I would say that it could hold, but if you drive like a nut you will can blow the 1.6. The 2.0 held up to the same nutcase driving it that blew the alpha trans apart.
